Hello everyone,
I have an IKEA Billy bookshelf that makes an annoying creaking noise when opening the doors. My specific question is: why does the Billy bookshelf creak when the doors are opened? What causes this noise, especially after some use, even when there’s no visible damage?
Also, I would like to know the best way to fix this creaking, ideally without having to take the entire shelf apart or perform complicated repairs. Are there any specific lubricants or techniques you would recommend?
Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello Mirapa,
your question is very well formulated, as squeaking in furniture like the Billy shelf can often have several causes.
In most cases, the squeaking is caused by friction between moving parts, such as the hinges of the doors, or by the wood or particle boards rubbing against each other. Especially with furniture made of particle board with a paper finish, moisture or temperature changes can cause the materials to expand or contract slightly, which promotes squeaking.
To fix this, I recommend first checking the hinges: it often helps to apply silicone spray or a special furniture oil carefully to the hinges. You should use it sparingly to avoid stains on the surface.
Additionally, you can work with some wax or special furniture wax (e.g., beeswax) on the edges or contact points. It is important that all screws are tightened, as a loose hinge causes increased friction and often squeaking.
If you like, I can also write you a step-by-step guide on how to do this.

IKEA furniture is not made from solid wood or premium materials, so such noises can never completely disappear.
Usually, the only solution is a “breaking in” period for the mechanism or a complete replacement of the hinges with higher-quality ones.
Don’t get me wrong, Tommy38, your tips are good, but sometimes you just have to accept that noises come with standard furniture. I think it’s better to invest in a higher-quality piece of furniture rather than constantly making repairs.

Do you already have experience with this, or even specific recommendations on which hinges perform better than the original IKEA ones?
I would like to first try minimizing the creaking with lubricants, but I also don’t want to cut corners if that isn’t a long-term solution. Your view that it might be a design flaw convinces me somewhat, but I am always open to practical solutions that lead to success without much effort.
Hey Mirapa, it sounds annoying, but don’t worry. 🙂
I had a little battle with the squeaky hinges on my Billy and solved it like this:
1. Unscrew the hinges
2. Wipe off the old lubricant
3. Apply silicone spray (great for repelling dust)
4. Screw the hinges back on tightly
After that, the noise stopped. Took less than 20 minutes, and the effect lasted a long time 😊.
Sometimes a drop of wax or candle wax on the contact points helps too. It calms the friction, making them whisper instead of scream. 😉
Good luck!
