Hello everyone, I’ve recently noticed that the doors on my Billy cabinet sometimes don’t fit properly. They no longer close flush, get stuck in some places, or hang slightly crooked. I’m interested in learning about the most common causes of this problem, especially with BILLY, as I suspect it might be related to the hinges or the material quality. Do you have any experience or ideas about what could be causing this? Are there typical weak points to watch out for during assembly or everyday use? Thanks in advance!

I completely understand your problem! It’s really frustrating when the doors suddenly don’t close properly, even though everything was installed correctly. In my experience, it was often due to the hinges becoming slightly loose or the screws loosening a bit over time from regular use.

That matches my experience exactly. I would recommend first checking all the screws on the hinges and tightening them if needed. If that doesn’t help, the issue could be warped door panels, especially if the furniture is located in places with fluctuating humidity.

BILLY often has simple mini hinges that can be easily misaligned during assembly. For doors that do not fit properly, simply check the screws on the hinges, readjust the door, and if necessary, replace the hinges.

The topic is actually more complex than it might seem at first glance. With BILLY, it is important to know that the hinges are not designed like those for heavy solid wood furniture but are rather optimized for cost efficiency. This means they may become loose more quickly.

This suspicion is correct. Furthermore, the construction itself can cause fitting issues: the drill holes and hinges allow only limited adjustment. For example, if the back panel is not perfectly flat or the base is uneven, the cabinet frame may warp slightly. This shifts the hinge axes and causes the doors to catch. The step-by-step approach would be: first, check the cabinet frame for levelness (ideally with a spirit level), then check the hinges for secure fitting and proper adjustment, and finally inspect the door panels for warping.

Is your apartment perhaps very humid, or does the humidity fluctuate widely? Particleboard is sensitive to such conditions.

Hey, I love solving these little everyday problems! 🙂 Adjusting BILLY’s doors isn’t actually that difficult and is really fun once you get the hang of it!

Try tightening the screws on the hinges properly and adjusting the screws that hold the door so that it sits perfectly centered. I just did this on mine, and now the doors fit perfectly again!!!

Sometimes it’s also enough to leave the doors open for a few days when the humidity is high – the material then works and “relaxes” a bit. Good luck, you can do it! 😉

That’s a very good point and one that is often underestimated! The wood-based materials in BILLY are sensitive to changes in climate and can warp or expand.

How about the position of the cabinet in the room? Is it placed near a heater or perhaps close to a poorly insulated exterior window? That could contribute to the dimensional changes you’re noticing.

One more tip: If you remove the doors and lightly lubricate the hinges with some oil, it can improve movement and make closing easier. Have you tried that yet?
