Elmedin1014 Jul 2020 08:04Hello everyone, I’ve noticed that some drawers of my Ikea Brimnes wardrobe start to squeak noticeably after some time, even though I haven’t changed anything unusual. I’m particularly interested in why this squeaking seems to happen quite often with the BRIMNES drawers, even though the fittings and slides are basically functional and simply designed. Are there common causes like material fatigue, lack of lubrication, or friction due to the design? And maybe someone already has durable solutions or tips to prevent or permanently eliminate this squeaking? I would really appreciate expert opinions so I can address the problem effectively.
Squeaking in Ikea BRIMNES drawers is often caused by the materials and design, especially the use of metal telescopic runners combined with particleboard. Friction between the metal and plastic rollers can increase over time if lubrication or maintenance is neglected. Stress points may also develop due to slight warping or settling in the wood load, which affects the alignment of the runners and leads to noise. A lasting solution is to regularly clean the runners and apply appropriate lubricants, such as silicone spray. Alternatively, replacing the runners with higher-quality models can sometimes help.

I had the same problem, and what worked great for me was using a little effort and the right product (silicone spray!). The drawer slides became almost silent again! It’s not as bad as I initially feared. Give it a try, it usually helps! Unfortunately, it’s no surprise since it’s caused by friction and material wear – but we can handle that =)!

The squeaking is often also a result of Ikea’s standardized solution: cheap, easy to produce, but problematic in the long run. Without regular maintenance, these are disposable products. Since Ikea tends to focus on quick sales, the “squeaking” almost encourages repurchasing or replacement. That’s obviously cynical, but it’s something to keep in mind. If you want a durable solution, it’s better to completely replace or modify the tracks.
