Some time ago, I bought several BILLY shelves from IKEA to better organize my home office. Unfortunately, I noticed that some of the shelves warped significantly after just a few months. My question to the community is: Why do some BILLY shelves warp over time? I suspect it might be related to the material, moisture, or usage, but I don’t want to just guess. Are there any known causes or mechanisms that could explain this warping? Any tips on how to prevent it would also be very welcome.
Hey, this topic is really important – I had exactly the same problem with my BILLY shelf! 🙂 Especially in summer, I noticed the shelves warping when the room got very warm and humid. What helped me was installing shelf supports with an additional center brace to better distribute the load. Since then, the shelf has been much more stable, and the shelves stay straight. Give it a try, I think it’s a great solution!

BILLY shelves are usually made of wood-based materials that are hygroscopic Exactly, that’s why it’s advisable not to place the shelving unit in the kitchen or bathroom, where humidity levels tend to fluctuate significantly. I also recommend airing the shelves occasionally—that is, removing them briefly and letting them dry in the air—if you notice that the room’s humidity remains high for an extended period. This helps prevent moisture damage early on.

Can warping also be caused by direct sunlight or large temperature fluctuations? That’s a good point. I’ve especially noticed near windows that temperature changes and UV exposure put additional stress on the material. It’s frustrating, but sometimes the only solution is better placement. If you can control the room’s climate, that also helps by keeping conditions more stable. Overall, warping doesn’t only happen because of moisture, but also due to thermal influences.
