Hello everyone,

I am currently dealing with a specific issue concerning the BILLY shelves from IKEA, specifically the shelf brackets. I have noticed that some of these small metal brackets warp or bend over time, which naturally causes the shelves to not fit properly or even fall out of the support.

My question to all of you is: Why do some BILLY shelf brackets warp, even though they are supposed to only carry the weight of the shelves and the items placed on them? Could it be due to material quality, installation errors, incorrect loading, or perhaps environmental factors? Are there known weak points or experiences you can share?

I look forward to an active exchange and your opinions, as I would like to better understand this issue and improve my shelves.

Temperature fluctuations or moisture can negatively affect the material over time.

Thank you for the note; I hadn’t fully considered that before. I suspect that in more humid rooms, slight rust spots could actually develop if the surface is damaged.

frequent removal and reinsertion of the brackets [...] puts stress on the metal.

I think that’s important because I’ve noticed at home that I often rearrange the shelves, especially when tidying up or making changes. This could lead to mechanical wear.

Does anyone have experience with reinforcements or DIY solutions to make these shelf supports more durable? How do you prevent warping from everyday use?

Perhaps we should also broaden the question to whether such products are actually suitable for every application, or if the customer is forced to constantly monitor the dead load along with any additional loads.

All I can say is: That’s exactly the point that is often overlooked. Many users expect a level of durability from these inexpensive shelves that they simply cannot provide. One must remember that price always implies a compromise.

Even if some are bothered by the warping of the supports, in my opinion, this is a natural consequence of the length of use and sometimes inappropriate handling.

An alternative, of course, is to get supports made from sturdier material or to reinforce the shelf with additional bracing. But then you’re no longer talking about an affordable IKEA-type product, but rather a specialized piece of furniture.
