Hello everyone,
I’ve noticed that some doors on my BILLY shelving unit continue to squeak despite regular care and cleaning. I’m not referring to the usual squeaky hinges caused by dust or dirt, but a persistent, annoying noise that remains even after several rounds of oiling and adjustments.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I’m asking specifically because I suspect it could be related to the mechanism or material stress, maybe even manufacturing tolerances. Are there any special tips on how to permanently fix the squeaking without having to replace the doors entirely?
Thanks in advance for your insights!

persistent, annoying noise that apparently remains even after several oilings and adjustmentsIf the squeaking persists despite maintenance, it is often caused by metal-on-metal friction. Check whether the screws on the hinges are tight and if the hinges themselves are not bent.
Otherwise, sometimes grease instead of oil helps, as it stays in the hinge longer.

Some people think oil is the miracle cure for squeaky doors, but with BILLY-style doors, which are often built lighter, the oil can evaporate or wear off quickly, causing the squeaking to come back.
Also, sometimes small plastic pieces inside the hinge housing can cause squeaking when moving. Oil won’t fix that; a felt pad or PTFE spray works better.
But honestly, a little squeak sometimes almost becomes part of the charm of a well-settled piece of furniture in your home… ;-)

I had the same issue with my BILLY shelf. First, it’s important to thoroughly clean everything, then treat the hinges with a good lubricant (ceramic or silicone spray works really well too).
Important: After lubricating, open and close the doors several times so the lubricant spreads evenly!
If the squeaking persists, it can help to slightly loosen the screws and make minor adjustments to the door alignment—sometimes the doors press against each other incorrectly, causing tension.
Fingers crossed you can fix it soon! Feel free to share an update on how it goes! 🙂
