Hello everyone,
I have noticed several times that some doors of my Billy bookshelf open on their own without me touching them. This is not only a bit annoying but also raises some questions for me: Why do some BILLY doors open by themselves? Are there known reasons for this phenomenon, such as structural defects, design features of BILLY, or perhaps environmental factors that play a role here? The doors themselves seem to be secured either magnetically or with simple hinges, but apparently not sufficiently. I would appreciate any technical explanations or practical tips on how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!

Hello Anjatra,
what you describe is a well-known issue with BILLY shelves, especially with older models or certain installation methods. Often, the doors open by themselves because the hinges are not tightened enough or the magnetic catches no longer hold firmly.

This can also be caused by an uneven surface: if the shelf is slightly tilted, the door’s weight can shift slightly and cause it to open. My advice would be to first check if the shelf is truly level—small wooden wedges or adjustable feet usually help. Then, check the hinges to make sure they are properly tightened and adjusted. Finally, take a look at the magnetic catches: they might be dirty or worn out and not holding the door securely.

Sometimes a small rubber buffer on the inside of the door helps to ensure it stays closed when pushed. I hope this helps you! 🙂

To add some context: The reason doors open by themselves is often due to the simple and inexpensive hinges used in BILLY units. These hinges do not have dampers, unlike those found in more expensive models. This means there is no self-closing effect or controlled closing.

Additionally, temperature fluctuations and humidity can cause the wooden panels to warp slightly, preventing the door from fitting flush and making it easier to open on its own.

The usual solution is to readjust the doors or install special fittings if you want lasting convenience. Shelves should also always be placed on level floors to avoid tilting and stress on the doors.

The cause is usually simple: BILLY doors do not have self-closing hinges. If they hang loosely or the floor is uneven, they often open on their own due to their own weight. Level the shelf and tighten the hinges.

That’s a valid point, but I wonder how often that is really the cause. Since BILLY shelves are fundamentally designed very simply, I would rather suspect that the basic construction of the hinge and the locking system is the issue—especially because the doors lack damping and the frame is made from thin particleboard.

In my opinion, this is a significant factor that is often underestimated. Especially in homes with varying indoor climates, particleboard expands or contracts, causing the doors to no longer close properly. The placement of the shelf should also be taken into account.

I think IKEA itself lacks a more robust solution—perhaps alternative hinges with damping or stronger magnetic catches could help.

I understand how frustrating this can be. It’s really annoying when doors just open on their own and things fall out. At my home, I had a small playroom for children, and every time the doors opened, it caused quite a mess.

One should consider the shelf’s positioning.

I can only agree with that. I later adjusted the shelf a bit differently, and it helped. I also adjusted the hinges to make them a bit tighter, which quickly relieved the problem.

Again: An unstable or uneven floor causes a lot of stress on the doors. So start there first, then check the hinges step by step.
