Hello everyone,

A few months ago, I bought a Malm bed from IKEA and tightened the screws properly according to the assembly instructions. However, I have noticed that they keep loosening over time. My question is: why does this happen?

Many people mention that the Malm screws tend to loosen after a while, even when tightened correctly. Is this due to the material quality, the design, or the type of screws used?

I would like to understand what causes this issue and how to prevent it. Are there specific techniques, replacement screws, or other tips to solve this problem permanently?

Does anyone know [...] if there are official replacement parts or upgrades available from IKEA?

IKEA itself offers replacement connector fittings, but these are identical to the original parts and do not significantly address the underlying issue.

An actual improvement can only be achieved by retrofitting with higher-quality metal threaded inserts or larger dowels, which involves modifying the furniture structure and is therefore not supported by the manufacturer.

Tightening the fittings regularly and using threadlocker are therefore the most practical recommendations.

I really like how everyone is sharing their experiences here! 🙂

One more tip from me: For my Malm bed, I added small washers to the screws. This helps distribute the pressure more evenly on the material.

It has significantly reduced loosening! Maybe something to try out!

Thank you for this tip! It sounds like a simple and effective way to reduce stress concentrations in the screw connection.

I will give it a try and report back on how it affects the stability.

Thanks to everyone for the well-informed contributions that are really helpful!
