Hello everyone, I have noticed that the drawers of my Malm dressers (Ikea) often stick, meaning they are hard to open or close. My question is: why do Malm drawers tend to stick so frequently? I suspect it might be related to the design or materials, or possibly to the load and usage. Are there known causes such as warping, material swelling due to moisture, or errors during assembly? I am open to any detailed explanations, and I am very interested in the technical background as well.

Great topic, thanks Floka for the question! 🙂

I had the same issue with my Malm chest of drawers and can say that with a little patience, you can definitely get the drawers running smoothly again!

My tip: It always depends on properly cleaning the drawer slides and treating them with silicone spray, which really makes a difference! Sometimes it’s just small details, like dirty or dry runners.

And very important: don’t give up right away, give your furniture a chance! 🙂

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for everyone trying to fix their Malm drawers—you can do it!!!

Hello, I would like to add that with Malm drawers, it’s especially important to check that the bottom and top edges of the drawer are free from foreign objects or damage. This can also cause jamming.

If there are even small irregularities, carefully sanding the edges slightly can be enough.

Additionally, the material is not very resistant to moisture. A home office with high humidity can already affect the fit.

It’s best to check regularly and act quickly if you notice any changes.

I hope my tips are helpful.

In summary: The most common reasons why Malm drawers stick are material swelling due to moisture, warping of the fronts, inaccurate installation, and worn or dirty drawer slides.

A targeted approach would be:
1. Remove the drawers and inspect them.
2. Clean the slides and tracks, and lubricate if necessary (silicone spray is recommended).
3. Check the fronts for warping and adjust them slightly if needed.
4. Monitor and reduce the ambient humidity in the room.

This will sustainably reduce sticking.

If the problem persists, contacting the manufacturer for advice may be helpful.
