Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a BILLY shelving unit at home and noticed that the doors sometimes stick, even though I followed the instructions carefully. Especially when closing, it feels like they don’t always open and close smoothly. My question is: why do BILLY doors sometimes stick after installation?

I suspect it could be due to the alignment of the hinges, the manufacturing of the doors, or possibly the condition of the wall. Does anyone have experience with common causes for this? And are there practical tips on how to permanently fix the issue without damaging the doors or the frame? I would really appreciate specific advice, as I like the shelving unit and the doors themselves, if only they would move properly.

Thanks in advance!

The misalignment of the clamps on BILLY doors after installation is often caused by improper adjustment of the hinges. Although the hinges are adjustable, if they are not precisely aligned, the door will pull too much on one side and become stuck.

Another often overlooked factor is that the shelves may not be perfectly level – if the cabinet sags or warps slightly due to an uneven floor or an uneven wall, this will also affect the door alignment.

Additionally, the doors themselves can sometimes be slightly warped, which is not uncommon with affordable flat-pack furniture. In such cases, adjusting the hinges carefully and, if necessary, lightly sanding the bottom or top corner of the door to reduce friction can help. However, this should be done with caution.

My advice: first, check carefully whether the cabinet is perfectly plumb, then adjust the hinges very precisely, and only if that does not help, work on the door mechanism or the wood. This approach helps avoid more serious damage.

I’m happy to present this topic in a more structured way, as I have encountered this issue frequently and want to provide a systematic overview of the causes:

1. Installation accuracy: The BILLY doors are made from lightweight particleboard, and the hinges require precise adjustment. Even a few millimeters of deviation when tightening the screws can lead to binding.

2. Uneven subfloor: If the cabinet frame is not perfectly level, the structure can deform slightly, causing the hinge to be out of alignment. The floor should be leveled if necessary using shims before installing the doors.

3. Wood moisture and material warping: BILLY shelves are not solid wood, so the doors can expand or warp easily due to moisture or temperature changes. This can also cause binding.

4. Hinge type and mounting: The original BILLY hinges are designed to be self-adjusting, but incorrect installation or unevenness can limit their function.

Summary and tips:
- Before installation, check that the cabinet frame is level and stable.
- Open the hinges slightly before screwing them in and adjust them carefully after installation (both horizontally and vertically).
- After mounting, carefully check the doors for warping.
- If necessary, lightly sand the edges or corners of the door to reduce friction.

Hope this helps!

The issue of doors sticking can be really frustrating – I’ve experienced it myself and understand how annoying it can be. What helped me most was carefully analyzing the cause instead of just hoping for it to fix itself.

One important aspect I initially overlooked was the so-called "settling" of the shelving unit after installation. Sometimes the unit seems stable at first, but once it’s in its final position and starts bearing weight, small angles can shift slightly due to pressure or load. That’s when the door no longer fits perfectly.

A tip from me: while you’re working on it, remove the door and check if the cabinet can be perfectly aligned by slightly adjusting the rear wall braces or by inserting small shims. Back then, I had to slightly loosen two screws to prevent the frame from warping.

Over time, I also learned that small additions like felt pads on the bottom of the door can help soften the contact and make operation smoother.

I hope this helps you solve the problem. 🙂
