I have noticed that the doors of my Billy bookcase often start squeaking only after intensive use. Therefore, I am very interested in understanding: Why do BILLY doors frequently begin to squeak only after prolonged use? Are there known mechanical or material-related reasons for this, possibly also connections to the design or material fatigue? I would appreciate well-founded explanations to better understand what is happening and how this can be prevented as much as possible.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! I made a brief adjustment to the doors upon delivery but haven’t done any further fine-tuning. I’m wondering if a precise adjustment of the hinges could reduce the squeaking, or if it’s primarily a lubrication issue. Could it possibly be a combination of both factors?

I think a combination works best: adjusting, lubricating, and occasionally giving them a friendly tap ;-)

Jokes aside – hinges sometimes just need a little care and attention. A clean, oiled hinge point and proper alignment often make doors work like new, without annoying squeaks. Remember that even small dust particles or dirt can cause unpleasant noises. So: care with attention, and the BILLY doors will thank you! 😊

Adjust the hinges and then clean and lubricate them. These are the only two steps needed to solve the problem. Material fatigue is irrelevant here.

I would like to add that occasional squeaking can also be caused by incorrect stress. If the door is opened too forcefully or incorrectly, small parts may shift slightly. These irregular frictions then cause the noise.

I find that quite plausible – so stress changes due to adjustment errors plus lack of lubrication. To prevent this in the long term, you should regularly readjust as well as maintain the doors. This will keep the doors quiet over time and protect the components!
