Hello everyone, I have recently noticed that the doors of my BILLY shelf often creak when I open or close them. I'm wondering: why do BILLY doors creak so frequently for many users? Is this a known issue related to the hardware quality, or is it more due to the assembly, humidity, or perhaps the material itself? I would like to understand what exactly to watch out for in order to prevent or fix the creaking. Perhaps someone here has long-term experience with BILLY and knows the typical causes.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful responses so far.

To shed a little more light on the topic of hinges: Are there specific model numbers of standard hinges that are more prone to squeaking? When I checked mine, I suspected they are just simple standard hinges – can these be easily replaced with more durable ones from a hardware store, or is something special recommended?

I want to avoid causing more problems by tinkering with such a simple part.

Yes, that usually works without any issues. However, you need to make sure the new hinges have the same hole positions or at least very similar ones. Otherwise, it can get complicated.

I once bought standard furniture hinges from the hardware store that were a bit heavier than the originals, and in my case, the creaking almost completely stopped.

If you decide to do it yourself: A small tip – high-quality hinges made of stainless steel or with ball bearings often provide much smoother operation. They are a bit more expensive but are worthwhile in the long run.

And as already mentioned: Clean the screws thoroughly beforehand, remove old residues, and then the new hinges will fit perfectly. Have fun with the BILLY operation! 😉

I would like to add that when replacing the hinges, you should also check the alignment of the doors themselves. Sometimes doors squeak because they are not properly aligned and rub against the edge. This leads to additional stress on the hinges.

It is also worth taking a look at the quality of the installation – especially with self-assembled shelves, it can happen that not all parts fit perfectly.

Exactly! I always say: A well-adjusted BILLY not only looks better but also doesn’t squeak.

So, thumbs up for the careful maintenance of your shelves! And don’t be afraid of a little screwdriver work—legends are made that way! 😉

Summary: Squeaking in BILLY mainly occurs due to lack of lubrication, material moisture, material fatigue, and incorrect assembly or adjustment. Oil helps. Replacing hinges is straightforward. Don’t forget to properly align the doors.
