Hello everyone,

I recently tried to install the shelves in my Billy bookcase, but some of the shelves were very difficult to fit. I noticed that the shelf supports often hold very tightly, so inserting the shelves requires considerable force, which makes me somewhat uneasy. I wonder if this is a normal manufacturing characteristic (for example, to ensure stability) or if it could be due to individual production tolerances.

I am also curious whether the difficulty in fitting the shelves might be related to differences in material thickness or the position of the support points. Has anyone else experienced something similar or knows any technical reasons why some BILLY shelves are particularly hard to insert?

Looking forward to your insights and advice!

This is normal. BILLY shelves are often a bit tight to prevent slipping later on. It’s best to attach the retaining clips before inserting the shelf.

Hello Kloli35,

I can understand that inserting the shelves into your BILLY unit is a tedious task. This often results from manufacturing tolerances in the drilled holes or slight variations in the support strips.

Sometimes, the notches for the shelves are slightly too small, so the shelf can only be inserted with noticeable pressure. This is not a defect but rather a measure to ensure greater stability, preventing the shelves from wobbling later on. In some cases, gently sanding the edges can help make insertion easier without compromising functionality.

The position of the small pads or support clips that you insert into the holes can also make a difference, as they secure the shelves in place. Check if they are properly seated.

I hope this helps! 🙂

I know that very well! Especially when assembling my BILLY shelves, inserting the shelves was sometimes quite a challenge! 🙂

The problem often lies with the small plastic pins or support strips, which sometimes fit a bit too tightly in the holes. If you slightly adjust the holders or install them with a bit more patience, it usually works better!

Sometimes a little lubricant, like some paraffin, can help the shelves slide in more easily. 🙂

Keep at it – the result is definitely worth it! Overall, the shelves are very sturdy when the shelves fit firmly. So it’s better to have them tight rather than loose. Good luck!

That’s exactly right. This is also a deliberate design choice by IKEA. The material specifications and manufacturing tolerances are designed so that the shelf fits firmly in the unit. If you force it too much, you can damage the support points.

I would only do this carefully, as it can otherwise affect the stability.

Additionally, you can slightly moisten the base before insertion or loosen the shelf on the side a bit to make inserting easier.
