I recently bought a Billy cabinet and noticed that some of the doors are hanging unevenly. This doesn’t seem to be an isolated case, as I was told it happens quite often. I’m really curious to understand why some BILLY doors hang crooked.
Is it due to the installation, the quality of the hinges, or could it be manufacturing tolerances on IKEA’s side?
I’m also interested in whether this can be easily fixed by myself and if there are any known weak points in the doors that cause this issue.
Who has experience with this? Just to clarify, I have already adjusted the doors properly, but there is always a slight tilt remaining.
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Oh yes, I know that all too well! :-)
The issue with unevenly hanging BILLY cabinet doors isn’t as complicated as it seems. It often comes down to the installation: if the hinges aren’t adjusted precisely, the doors can easily become misaligned. Especially with particleboard, like the kind used in BILLY furniture, the screws don’t always hold perfectly, particularly if you adjust the doors frequently. 🙂
What really helps is being patient during the adjustment and fine-tuning every screw carefully! It’s great that you can optimize this yourself, right? 😊 So don’t give up, you can definitely fix it!

I think there’s something amusing about that too: sometimes a crooked door almost feels like a little character trait.
But seriously – if you adjust the hinges properly and place the cabinet on a level floor, it can usually be fixed quite well. A bit of DIY skill definitely helps. 😉
Sometimes it also helps to slightly loosen the screws and then realign everything again.

Is it due to the installation, the quality of the hinges, or could it be dimensional tolerances from IKEA?BILLY doors often hang unevenly due to a combination of installation factors and the mechanical properties of the hinges.
Technically, the hinges are not fully self-centering and allow only limited adjustment. Additionally, the use of particleboard, which is prone to deformation, can cause the screws to lose their grip over time.
IKEA allows certain dimensional tolerances that cannot be completely avoided during manufacturing, especially for budget furniture.
The levelness of the surface underneath also plays a role: uneven flooring can tilt the entire piece of furniture, resulting in misaligned doors.
Recommendation: Check the installation steps, use spacers or shims if necessary, and adjust the hinges with an appropriate screwdriver.

Sometimes it helps to completely remove the door and realign it.

If the screw holes have been used multiple times, small wooden dowels can work wonders to make the screws hold properly again. I recently did this, and since then the door has been hanging perfectly. 😉
Don’t worry, anyone can do this!
