Hello everyone, I am currently working on mounting the Malm shelves from Ikea and have encountered some difficulties. My main issue is that the shelves are hard to secure to the wall. It feels like the pre-drilled holes and the included mounting hardware are not perfectly matched. Additionally, the instructions seem somewhat unclear regarding the exact positioning of the brackets.
Since I want to ensure a safe and long-lasting installation, I’m wondering if this is a common problem—specifically, why are Malm shelves difficult to mount? Are there any particular challenges during assembly, specific wall types, or fastening components that should definitely be considered? I’m very interested in any experiences or tips, especially about which methods and materials have proven reliable.

Also, I wonder if the pre-drilled holes in the shelf parts often align well with the mounts.Josefane, that’s a valid point. In my experience, the fit of the pre-drilled holes is generally accurate. However, manufacturing tolerances or imprecise positioning during installation can cause issues. It’s important to screw in the fasteners carefully and align the shelf parts precisely with the mounts.
I also recommend loosely attaching the shelf parts before the final assembly and test-fitting the entire system. This way, any discrepancies can be identified and corrected early on.
Regarding your criticism of Ikea: yes, the instructions could be more detailed, especially for different wall types. Here, experience or additional research is the best help.

Why are Malm shelves difficult to secure? An interesting theory: Maybe they are deliberately designed to be hard to install so that customers are pushed towards expensive assembly services or replacement parts?
I believe this is a calculated approach by Ikea. Standard components are provided, which are hardly suitable for real durability or for different types of walls. This forces many to upgrade, which is financially a clever strategy.
Of course, this may sound cynical, but when you look at the materials and customer service, it becomes clear that the company hardly accommodates individual installation needs.
The fact is: Malm shelves come with a universal mounting kit designed for solid walls using standard wall plugs.
For softer materials such as drywall or porous walls, standard wall plugs are not sufficient. The difficulty in securely mounting Malm shelves often arises because many users use the original accessories without considering the wall type.
My advice:
- Check the wall material carefully.
- Use appropriate anchors (metal cavity anchors for drywall, chemical anchors for older masonry walls).
- Measure several times before drilling and use a spirit level.
Additionally, especially for larger shelves, an extra wall anchor can be useful to help distribute the load.
