Hello everyone, I am currently working on mounting the Malm shelves from Ikea and have encountered some difficulties. My main issue is that the shelves are hard to secure to the wall. It feels like the pre-drilled holes and the included mounting hardware are not perfectly matched. Additionally, the instructions seem somewhat unclear regarding the exact positioning of the brackets.

Since I want to ensure a safe and long-lasting installation, I’m wondering if this is a common problem—specifically, why are Malm shelves difficult to mount? Are there any particular challenges during assembly, specific wall types, or fastening components that should definitely be considered? I’m very interested in any experiences or tips, especially about which methods and materials have proven reliable.

Hello bodillau,

I am very familiar with this issue and can help clarify things. In general, Malm shelves are not too difficult to install if you keep a few points in mind:

1. Check the wall type: Drywall requires special anchors, as standard anchors for concrete rarely work there.

2. Drill according to the instructions: The manual often only provides approximate measurements for the brackets. It’s worth measuring the distance between the drill holes precisely with a spirit level.

3. Verify the fixing materials: Often, only basic plastic components are included, which should be replaced with metal anchors for heavier loads.

4. Use installation assistance: Having a second person hold the shelf greatly helps with accurate positioning.

Conclusion: The difficulty usually doesn’t come from the shelf itself, but because the instructions do not account for individual wall conditions and the standard hardware is not ideal for all situations. If you like, I can also offer tips on how to select the right anchors and screws.

The main reason is the unclear instructions and the fastening materials. I always use appropriate metal anchors and precisely mark all the holes beforehand. This way, you avoid things going wrong.

That may be true, but I find the argument somewhat superficial. Malm shelves are a mass-produced product – so why not offer a more universal solution or at least better guidance for different types of walls?

Also, I wonder whether the pre-drilled holes in the shelf parts often align properly with the brackets. Is there any evidence or user experience confirming this? Otherwise, I believe the manufacturer should be responsible for updating the design or assembly process to meet current standards.

Good question. In my models, the drilled holes in the shelf parts do align with the brackets, but the overall package still makes it difficult.

Especially the connection between the shelf and the wall bracket is often not quite precise, so when mounting, it’s almost impossible to hang the shelf without already tightening a screw. Sometimes the hole barely fits the screw and anchor, which doesn’t make assembly any easier.

I’m also wondering if this could be solved with a small modification or a replacement part.

I usually install Malm shelves using metal hollow wall anchors for drywall. The standard plastic anchors from Ikea are often weak. The screws and brackets fit well together; you just need to work carefully and precisely.
