Hello everyone,

I’m curious if anyone in this forum uses silicone seals to prevent dust from entering the compartments of IKEA Kallax units. The Kallax shelves have open compartments that unfortunately fill up with dust quite quickly—especially when used for storage in living or workspaces.

I’m considering applying silicone seals to the edges of the storage boxes or doors to achieve a better seal. I have a few questions: How effective are silicone seals against dust? Are there any specific products that are particularly recommended for this purpose? And how easy is the installation in daily use?

Maybe some of you have been using this method for a while and can share your experiences—such as whether dust really stays out, if the seals are easy to replace, and whether the effort is worth the benefit.

Looking forward to your answers and tips!

Hello Tolga,

I actually use silicone seals in my Kallax compartments to prevent dust buildup, as the open compartments can be quite problematic in dusty environments.

First, regarding effectiveness: Silicone seals can form a significant barrier against dust particles, especially if the seal fits snugly around the frame and the door all around. However, even a small gap can greatly reduce their effectiveness.

About installation:
1. Cleaning the edges is essential to ensure the adhesive surface of the seal sticks well.
2. I recommend flexible silicone profiles that can be cut to size – these are often available by the meter at hardware stores.
3. Pay attention to the right thickness: too thin won’t seal properly, too thick will prevent the door from closing correctly.

A common mistake is stretching the seal – this reduces adhesion and easily leads to gaps. Patience during installation is important.

In practice, dust stays noticeably longer outside. The seals usually need to be replaced after about 2–3 years, as they become brittle over time due to exposure to light and use.

In brief: For those who value dust-free spaces, silicone seals provide a practical solution – but careful installation and occasional replacement are necessary.

If you want any tips on product selection or installation, just let me know!

I find this statement interesting but would like to offer a critical perspective: dust consists of very fine particles that can diffuse even through seemingly “denser” seals.

Does anyone have concrete experience or measurement data on how much less dust actually accumulates with silicone seals?

Also, I wonder whether the effort of installation and replacing the seals over time truly provides a noticeable benefit, or if regular cleaning would be just as effective—especially since door contact points can trap dirt that isn’t visible from the outside.

I would like to see more analytical evaluations of this method rather than simply the claim that silicone seals are dust-tight. Ideally, with a cost-benefit assessment.

I have been using silicone seals on my Kallax shelf for six months. Definitely less dust gets through. Installation takes less than 30 minutes. I will probably only need to replace them in a few years. For me, the effort has been worthwhile.

Hello tolga,

this topic deserves a technical approach because dust protection in open shelving units depends not only on the seal itself but on several factors:

1. Seal material: Silicone is good because it is flexible and durable. However, there are also foam seals made from PU or EPDM that, depending on the manufacturer, can offer better insulation against dust particles.

2. Profile shape: Flat seals with a slight compression or round seals each provide different degrees of sealing. For Kallax, flat, flexible rubber or silicone strips are especially suitable, as they seal the door flexibly without restricting usability.

3. Surface adhesion: It is important that the seal has a strong adhesive that bonds well to wood or lacquered surfaces.

4. Installation instructions: The frame must be clean, grease-free, and dry. Also, the seal should be pressed onto the door with light pressure so that no gaps remain when closing.

5. Ventilation: It is also interesting that a completely airtight compartment without ventilation can lead to slight moisture buildup. While dust is kept out, other unwanted side effects may occur.

Perhaps you can tell us how often you open the compartments and if you store sensitive items inside? This helps to recommend whether a silicone seal alone is sufficient or if a combination with an additional door might be ideal.

Just as information: As a manufacturer of shelving solutions, I recommend a combination of silicone sealing and regular cleaning to achieve optimal dust protection.
