renluHello everyone,
I’m currently considering using my Kallax shelving unit as a room divider and came across some harmonious LED lights that can be integrated into it. My goal is to create a cozy atmosphere in addition to dividing the space, without the lighting being too bright or distracting. Since I’m more technically inclined, I’d like to know if any of you have experience with such LED light strips or panels on a Kallax unit? How exactly did you install them, which products have proven reliable, and which settings or color temperatures really create a harmonious feeling in the room?
I’m also interested in any important tips regarding power supply or securing the LEDs that I—as a beginner—should definitely be aware of. Thanks in advance!

Hello renlu,
first of all, I really like your idea of using harmonious LED lights on the Kallax as a room divider, since it combines functionality with atmosphere.
Here is a brief overview of how I implemented this myself:
1. Selection of LEDs: I recommend flexible LED strips with a warm white color temperature (around 2700K-3000K). These create a pleasant, non-glare light.
2. Installation: I attached the LED strips to the back of the Kallax shelves using double-sided tape. Important: the surface must be clean and free of grease; otherwise, the tape will not hold.
3. Power supply: Pay close attention to the rated voltage (usually 12V). A power supply with sufficient capacity (at least 10-15% more than the maximum wattage of the strip) ensures stability.
4. Control: For harmonious effects, I use a dimmable controller. This way, you can adjust the brightness according to the time of day, making the atmosphere much cozier.
5. Cable routing: Hide the cables behind the Kallax back panel as well to keep everything tidy.
Common mistakes:
- Placing LED strips too close to white surfaces, which can make the light appear harsh.
- Using an inadequate power supply, which leads to flickering.
I hope this helps! If you want, I can provide you with a more detailed guide.

I find that color effects can quickly become overwhelming or intrusive, depending on how they are used.
Also, I wonder about the durability of such lighting: Do LED strips need regular maintenance or replacement? Especially for room dividers that are moved or cleaned more often, this could be a practical concern.
Perhaps someone has long-term experience.
Very interesting topic!
Regarding durability and maintenance, I can add the following: LED strips are generally very long-lasting, especially when powered by a high-quality power supply and not subjected to overheating. When used on the Kallax as a room divider, I also recommend mounting them on aluminum profiles – this significantly improves heat dissipation and extends the lifespan.
A common challenge is power supply with movable furniture: if you plan to frequently rearrange the Kallax shelving room divider, it may be helpful to equip the power cables with flexible connectors or quick couplings. This helps prevent cable breakage.
For harmonious lighting effects, the combination of correctly set color temperature and smooth dimming is crucial. An LED controller with memory function is convenient so that the chosen mood settings are preserved after switching off.
Liduta is right about mounting on the back of the shelves – it keeps things neat and dust-free. Additional diffusers or frosted covers can help soften the light.
What does your planned room layout look like? Do you need shelves to be continuously lit or rather individual light accents?

What is your planned room layout? Do you need shelves with continuous lighting or more individual light accents? Thanks for the detailed information! My Kallax will primarily serve as a half-height room divider in the living and dining area. I plan to equip it with LEDs only on one side to have a soft light source in the evening. I think individual accents would be good, for example, LEDs in the compartments that I light alternately, perhaps with gentle dimming.
The aluminum profile idea sounds sensible; I hadn’t really considered that before and will take a closer look. Do you have any recommendations for controllers that are particularly reliable or offer good value for money?
@BAUEVA: Warm white sounds really good, but I also find subtle color variations interesting. Are there any good models you would recommend that can emit both warm white and slight color changes without being too bright?
