Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip my IKEA Kallax shelves with additional shelves, but I do not want to buy the expensive original shelf boards. The standard boards are too costly for me, as I need to outfit several shelves accordingly. Therefore, my question is: Does anyone know of affordable yet sturdy alternatives for shelf boards suitable for Kallax units? It is especially important to me that the alternatives fit well into the existing support rails or are easy to install without requiring major modifications.

I would also appreciate tips on materials or sources. Thanks in advance!

Just buy MDF or plywood panels 16 mm (5/8 inch) thick and have them cut to 33 x 39 cm (13 x 15 inches). They fit perfectly into the Kallax shelf.

Then you should mark the drill holes for the brackets or use new wall plugs.

16 mm (5/8 inch) is slightly thicker than the originals (about 15 mm). With 16 mm (5/8 inch), the prefabricated guide sleeves might fit a bit tight or not at all.

My advice: Measure and note the thickness of your original shelf, then pay particular attention to that when you go to the hardware store.

I recently found replacement shelves made of coated MDF, specifically designed for Kallax shelves, at a large hardware store.

That’s a good option if available. Such offers are often found online, but shipping costs can be significant.

Hello Kigovin,

I recommend considering the option of Plexiglass or acrylic sheets. Although these are often a bit more expensive than MDF, they are especially lightweight, durable, and very easy to clean. In addition, they have a more modern appearance.

A brief guide:
- Take exact measurements (33 x 39 cm (13 x 15 inches))
- Use an acrylic sheet with a thickness of 10 to 12 mm (0.4 to 0.5 inches)
- For drilling, use a drill bit designed specifically for plastic
- Don’t forget to deburr the edges if necessary

For a shelf that might occasionally get some moisture or needs to be wiped down easily, this is a good alternative. It’s certainly not the cheapest option, but it is high quality.

If you are looking for affordable wood alternatives, the suggestions from LOGEMIN are, as always, very well-founded.

Good morning,

for someone looking for a simpler solution, there is also the option to cut standard OSB boards and finish the edges with edge banding or edge protection tape. This is very cost-effective.

The downside is that OSB is not very attractive visually, so you might want to paint it or cover it with film to achieve a look closer to the IKEA style.

ich empfehle dir, die Variante mit Plexiglas oder Acrylplatten mal in Betracht zu ziehen.

That is certainly elegant, but since we are talking about affordable alternatives, costs should be kept in mind.

One more practical idea:

You can also use sturdy cardboard panels reinforced with wooden battens. This is often sufficient for lighter storage needs.

That might work, but it is significantly less durable, especially when moisture or heavy loads are involved.

For something used daily, I would recommend wood-based materials.
