Hello everyone,

I’m wondering if any of you use the IKEA Kallax shelf permanently on your balcony? I’m especially interested in how the furniture holds up outdoors – for example, in terms of weather resistance and maintenance.

I have a covered balcony and would like to use the shelf for storing plant pots and small gardening tools. However, I’m concerned about moisture, direct sunlight in summer, and even frost in winter.

Has anyone had experience with the KALLAX outside, particularly regarding stability, material deterioration, or other issues that might not be obvious at first?

Looking forward to your insights and tips!

I also have a KALLAX outside, but I cover it with a tarp when bad weather is expected. 🙂

Luckily, I have a small covered balcony, so it works pretty well there. Of course, it’s not outdoor furniture, but with a little care and protection, the shelves can handle quite a bit!

And hey, if it smells like sunshine and not wood rot, that’s a good sign, right? ;-)

What bothered me the most was the quick appearance of a damp smell and small swelling at the edges.

I can confirm that. My KALLAX was left on the balcony all winter without any protection. The swollen spots could be sanded down, but that was more of a temporary fix.

Personally, I would rather invest in a weather-resistant alternative, even if it costs more. Sometimes you end up spending more time and money on repairs or constant replacement. Still, respect to everyone who uses the furniture outdoors and takes care of it – that really shows some “love and care” for their favorite piece! 🙂
