Hello everyone,

I’m wondering if any of you use the IKEA Kallax shelf permanently on your balcony? I’m especially interested in how the furniture holds up outdoors – for example, in terms of weather resistance and maintenance.

I have a covered balcony and would like to use the shelf for storing plant pots and small gardening tools. However, I’m concerned about moisture, direct sunlight in summer, and even frost in winter.

Has anyone had experience with the KALLAX outside, particularly regarding stability, material deterioration, or other issues that might not be obvious at first?

Looking forward to your insights and tips!

I have had my KALLAX on a covered balcony for 2 years now. It is important that it does not get directly wet. Occasionally wipe it with a damp cloth. So far, no damage.

This is a crucial point that klemens should consider. The material is MDF or particle board, which swells when exposed to moisture. Therefore, its durability in outdoor environments is very limited.

I would also question whether a KALLAX with its painted surface is UV-resistant. With prolonged exposure to sunlight, the paint will fade or become brittle. In this case, a specialized outdoor cabinet would be more suitable.

I understand your concerns about how the furniture will hold up outdoors. I also tested my KALLAX by placing it on a covered balcony for six months as a trial. What I didn’t like was that it quickly developed a damp smell and small swelling appeared on the edges.

Maybe it would help to protect the shelf with a weather-resistant film or paint on the sides? If you’re still uncertain, that could provide some extra protection.

I also use KALLAX outdoors, but only in a covered area. Regularly wipe it down and do not place anything very heavy on it. Otherwise, it holds up quite well.

Let’s be honest, KALLAX is an indoor piece of furniture. Those who use it permanently outdoors usually run into problems because of the basic choice of materials. There are garden cabinets made of plastic or metal that are specifically designed for outdoor conditions.

I wonder if convenience is the real reason here – simply placing what you already have at home quickly on the balcony. But in the long run? Not ideal, and it will get expensive with repairs.
