ᐅ Has anyone ever retrofitted a plug-in system into a Kallax shelving unit?

Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to retrofit my IKEA Kallax shelf with a modular system to make the layout more flexible. Has anyone had experience installing such a modular system themselves in a Kallax after purchase? I’m especially interested in the practical challenges during installation, the materials required, and whether it’s really worth it in the end—particularly compared to ready-made solutions.
I would appreciate any advice on potential pitfalls or tips regarding stability and design. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the tips on drilling accuracy!
I definitely plan to do it that way. Do you have any experience with how stable a plug-in system with metal brackets is under normal residential load? Would a Kallax also hold up in the long term if I attach the brackets not only to the front but also to the back panel?
Is that mechanically reasonable, or is there a risk that the board will weaken too much from the drill holes?

Especially with wider shelves, it significantly increases stability. However, before drilling, check whether the back panel itself is sturdy enough; Kallax often uses only thin hardboard.
Important: Avoid making too many holes close together – the wood can tear out or split.
Conclusion: Yes, fixing on the sides and back is sensible, but proceed carefully. If you add extra wooden strips as reinforcement, you can further improve the load capacity.
That sounds like a cool project! I think the Kallax really gains flexibility through modular systems. Especially when you want to rearrange compartments spontaneously, it’s really practical.
I haven’t built a modular system myself yet, but regarding stability: Everything you do yourself will give a great DIY feeling – and every little hiccup becomes part of the story ;-)
Suggestion: Make a small sketch, carefully mark all the drill holes – then you’ll see how it looks in real life. I’m looking forward to hearing if you update us later! 🙂
