Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to retrofit my IKEA Kallax shelf with a modular system to make the layout more flexible. Has anyone had experience installing such a modular system themselves in a Kallax after purchase? I’m especially interested in the practical challenges during installation, the materials required, and whether it’s really worth it in the end—particularly compared to ready-made solutions.

I would appreciate any advice on potential pitfalls or tips regarding stability and design. Thanks in advance!

Installing a plug-in system into a Kallax unit later can vary depending on the system used. The first important step is choosing the type of plug-in system: there are prefabricated plastic or metal plugs that fit into holes or slots, or custom solutions using dowels.

To achieve a stable result, you should first empty the shelf and then pre-drill the necessary holes if they are missing. The depth and material (chipboard) of the Kallax do not allow for very heavy loads, which must be taken into account when loading the plug-in system shelves.

Prefabricated solutions are convenient but often expensive. Building your own can be cheaper but requires craftsmanship and precise measurements.

I installed a plug-in system myself using anchors. Important: careful planning of the hole spacing. Do not use a drill bit that is too large, otherwise it will fit too loosely.

Installing a plug-in system into the Kallax unit afterwards is a great way to make the furniture more versatile.

First: check the thickness of the shelves. Kallax typically has 12 mm (0.5 inches) thick particleboard shelves, which can bend under heavy load. I recommend using a bracket to stabilize the plug-in system additionally.

Also, pay attention to where the screws or dowels are placed to avoid splitting the wood – pre-drilling is essential.

When choosing the plug-in systems, keep in mind: plastic clips are less load-bearing, while metal ones prove more reliable for heavier inserts.

What I also do: attach additional braces to the back panels to increase the stability of the plug-in shelves.

Are you more interested in design or maximum load capacity?

That sounds reasonable. How do you manage the accuracy? Drill bits and markings – does anyone have tips for tools that help ensure the holes are drilled precisely? I’m concerned that otherwise the dowel strips or connector systems might be misaligned and the whole thing could become unstable.

I use a drill guide or a right-angle attachment on the cordless drill; this helps keep the drill bit perpendicular. For marking, a narrow square and a sharp pencil work well. If you don’t have a special drill guide, a homemade template made from plywood that you can reposition multiple times also helps.

It’s also important to mark the drill bit with tape to control the drilling depth. This prevents drilling too deep and avoids splintering.
