Hello everyone, I’m considering placing my IKEA KALLAX shelf on a platform to highlight it a bit and also protect the floor. The question I have is: who of you has built a platform for your KALLAX, and how did you secure it to ensure the shelf stands stable and safe? I’m especially interested in solutions that prevent the shelf from sliding or tipping over later on. Maybe you also have tips on which materials work well for the platform to support the shelf optimally? Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

My tip: Use mounting brackets and add small floor fixings, such as rubber pads. This way, the KALLAX will not slip even under load.

One idea for the precise procedure: First, cut the base to the appropriate size, then align the panel on a level surface. It is important to securely screw the base and avoid any gaps between the base and the shelving unit. If the KALLAX base is used as a support structure, I also recommend adding additional reinforcement on the back panel, as the base may affect the stability of the shelving unit. For securing, brackets screwed to the lower sides of the shelving unit are usually sufficient. Non-slip pads underneath can also help prevent slipping on smooth floors.

Platform made of 18mm (0.7 inch) plywood, painted. Kallax fixed with brackets, rubber pads underneath. Important: The platform must be stable; otherwise, it will be wobbly.

Usually, angles attached to the bottom sides of the shelf are sufficient for securing it.

Exactly, that sounds so simple – and that’s exactly why I want to understand your solution like this here. Sometimes we tend to overthink complicated installations, but often a simple angle bracket and some non-slip material might be enough. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks to everyone for your feedback – I’ve noticed that most of you prefer plywood panels as the base material and use brackets for securing them. I also find the tips about anti-slip pads underneath interesting, which I hadn’t considered before. Is there a recommendation for the minimum thickness the base should have to ensure enough stability and load-bearing capacity? I want to avoid the base bending, especially when placing heavy decorations or shelves with many books on it.
