Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to install alternative hinges on my IKEA KALLAX cabinet doors because I am not completely satisfied with the original hinges. I am especially interested in hearing from those of you who have experience mounting KALLAX doors using alternative hingesâthat is, not the standard KALLAX hinges, but different models or even completely different systems.
I would like to know which hinges you used, how you technically solved the attachment (e.g., any modifications to the doors or shelves), and whether you encountered any issues with stability or fit.
Also, how did you fix the hinges to the cabinet itself? I imagine that the cabinet materialânot solid woodâmight pose some challenges.
Are there screws, plugs, or other aids that have proven effective? I look forward to your feedback and tips, including advice on tools and the installation process.
Thanks in advance!

I can understand your situation wellâattaching alternative hinges to KALLAX doors is a challenge with several important details to consider.
Regarding the material: The KALLAX shelving frames are made of coated particleboard, which is less ideal for heavy loads with standard screws. I recommend using special particleboard screws with small heads, as these are less likely to cause tearing and provide better grip.
Regarding the approach: First, you need to choose hinges that work well with the depth and construction of the KALLAX unitâvertical drilling positions must match the hinge, otherwise the door will either be too loose or jammed. Alternative hinges like clip-on or stainless steel hinges with adjustable mounting plates work well, but you often need to use an angle bracket or small spacers to position the door flush.
For the actual mounting: Pre-drilling is essential to prevent the shelving material from splitting when screwing in. The screws should be at least 25 mm (1 inch) longer than the door panel thickness but not too thick to avoid cracking. To improve holding strength, you can also install threaded inserts (threaded bushings) into the KALLAX unit if you are willing to do some extra work.
How were you thinking of attaching the hinges? Using the original drilling holes or drilling new ones? This also significantly affects stability.
Iâm curious which specific hinges you are considering and what your goals are in terms of stability and appearance.
Best regards!

Iâm interested in which hinges you used, how the attachment was technically handled (e.g., adjustments to the doors or shelves), and whether there were any issues with stability or fit.Hello malen38,
quick question first: Are you using doors with the standard dimensions and thickness of KALLAX, or were the doors custom made? The thickness of the board has a big impact on which hinges will fit.
In my case, I used simple hinges from a hardware store on two of my KALLAX units that better matched the internal wall structure. I had to slightly adjust the drill holes for the hinges because the original KALLAX doors are designed for concealed hinges with cup holes. This meant I had to drill new holes for the hinge cups using a Forstner bit (35mm (1.4 inches)) so that the more affordable surface-mounted hinges would fit.
The attachment to the shelf was done with small angle brackets since the particleboard alone didnât hold many screws well without extra support. While screwing directly into the shelf is possible, itâs better to use dowels in the back panel or add reinforcements.
Regarding stability issues: If you donât pre-drill or use screws that are too large, there is a higher risk of splitting, especially if you plan to put a lot of weight on the doors later. The fit always depended on adjusting the door and hinge as well as the correct mounting height on my endâso careful measuring and a mounting jig are worthwhile.
I hope this helps a bit. If you like, I can share the brand of hinges I used.
