Good morning everyone,

I am planning to improve my Ikea Besta shelving unit by adding custom wooden edging, specifically to enhance the appearance of the edges and better protect them against moisture and mechanical wear. The question I have is: Which wood edge sealants work well for Ikea Besta furniture, especially considering the combination of the typical melamine substrate of the Besta and the application of oiled or varnished wooden strips?

I am particularly interested in sealants that adhere well to melamine edges, are neither too glossy nor too brittle, and provide a durable surface. Is it generally better to use oil, varnish, or wax in this case? Also, what is the recommended surface preparation before sealing?

I look forward to factual experiences or recommendations from you professionals and hobby carpenters!

Could a polyurethane varnish with a matte finish possibly be a better option?

I can confirm that. Polyurethane varnishes (PU varnishes) are very durable, resistant to abrasion and moisture, and are also available in matte finishes. The application process is similar; the surface needs to be finely sanded and clean.

For DIY enthusiasts, water-based PU varnish is recommended, as it has low odor and dries quickly.

I have already treated beech edges with matte PU varnish, and after more than a year of use, they show no discoloration or visible scratches, even with regular handling.

Applying a small amount of wax as a final protective layer is also possible if you appreciate the matte wood look with a velvety feel. It is important to use wax sparingly, as it softens the surface slightly and does not increase the hardness of the varnish.
