ᐅ Which tools should you always have on hand for repairs on IKEA Hemnes furniture?

Pinla30Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes sideboard and would like to handle minor repairs and adjustments myself in the future, without constantly relying on professionals. Therefore, I am interested in which tools should always be on hand for repairs on furniture from the Hemnes series in the IKEA range.
I am not only thinking about classic tools like screwdrivers but also possibly special hand tools that can be helpful for fine adjustments, tightening screws, or replacing fittings.
Are there any tools that are especially useful in practice but often overlooked? For which typical repairs are they needed exactly?
Also: Are there universal toolkits you would recommend, or is it better to acquire the tools individually?
I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hi Pinla30,
great question – repairs on IKEA Hemnes furniture usually involve either the joints or the hinges, so you don’t need a full workshop. I personally always keep a set of Phillips and flathead screwdrivers on hand. These are the classics and are often used for assembling furniture.
In addition, I recommend a cordless drill with adjustable torque – it saves you from sore muscles when tightening screws, and being careful when tightening helps prevent applying too much force and avoids damage.
Honestly: a small Allen key (often included) should always be within reach. It’s great for tightening and adjusting furniture. Also, a small hammer for aligning wooden parts can never hurt, especially if wooden dowels are loose.
If you want to keep it simple: a bit of patience and the right tools go a long way 🙂 Good luck!

I would like to use your thread to explore the topic a bit more deeply. The Hemnes series is traditionally made of solid pine wood, which adds to its stability but also brings some particular challenges when it comes to repairs.
For tightening and replacing screws, besides the standard Phillips screwdriver, Allen wrenches (hex keys) in various sizes are essential. IKEA often uses special steel brackets and hidden fittings that are difficult to access without the correct hex key.
Additionally, I recommend a spirit level and a tape measure to ensure that no stress or twisting occurs during reassembly or after repairs, as this can unfortunately damage the furniture over time.
A metal bracket can help stabilize cracked wooden parts. A light wood glue is also useful if joints start to loosen or if small cracks appear.
Typical repairs often involve loose screws in drawer runners or at the cabinet corners, readjusted door hinges, as well as occasional repairs to the drawer slides. A fine set of screwdrivers will help here, and sometimes small pliers are useful for adjusting small parts in the drawer sliders.
A small set of various screwdriver bits, such as Torx and Allen, is very helpful because IKEA often installs different systems.
Do you already have an idea which repair you want to tackle next? That would help tailor the tool recommendations even more precisely.

Hello Pinla30,
I would like to add a clear structure to the previous tips, so you can specifically choose the right tools to repair your Hemnes furniture:
1. Basic equipment:
- Phillips screwdriver (size PH2 is common for IKEA)
- Flathead screwdriver (for smaller screws or prying tasks)
- Allen key set (preferably from 2.5 mm to 6 mm)
2. Mechanical tools:
- Cordless drill/driver with adjustable torque (to protect the wood and screws)
- Small hammer or rubber mallet (for dowels and light adjustments)
- Combination pliers (to adjust small fittings)
3. Measuring and adjustment tools:
- Spirit level (for the carcass and installation)
- Tape measure / ruler (for modifications and accessory installation)
4. Consumables:
- Wood glue (water-resistant, for joints and small cracks)
- Replacement screws or fittings (IKEA often offers spare parts)
Typical repairs for Hemnes include:
- Tightening screws on drawer slides and carcasses
- Adjusting or replacing door hinges
- Repairing small cracks with glue
- Adjusting the running rails
This is important: Solid wood reacts to moisture and temperature, so you should be cautious when tightening screws. If you overtighten, wooden parts can get pinched.
In general, I recommend tightening screws by hand first, then, if needed, carefully tighten them further with a cordless drill on low torque.
I wish you good luck with your repairs! If you have specific problems, feel free to post more detailed information.
