frajuliann2 Aug 2017 10:23Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble several BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to make sure I have all the necessary tools ready. Since I am not entirely sure what exactly is needed – especially which hand tools and possibly any special aids – I wanted to ask: What tools should be prepared for assembling BILLY shelves? Any tips on common challenges during assembly and how to best prepare would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hello frajuliann,
to answer your question in detail: You don’t really need much to assemble BILLY shelves. Usually, the package includes the appropriate screws and wall plugs, even a small Allen key for the cam connectors. Nevertheless, I recommend having the following tools ready:
1. Medium-sized Phillips screwdriver – many screws are easier to turn with this than with the included tool.
2. Hammer – for inserting wall plugs or nails, if supplied.
3. Spirit level – to ensure the shelf is perfectly level, especially important with multiple units.
4. Tape measure – for positioning and fitting the unit into the intended space.
5. Possibly a cordless drill with low torque, if you want to save time.
Typical pitfalls are precisely aligning the shelves and securing the unit to the wall. BILLY shelves are quite straightforward, but inaccurate positioning can cause problems later on.
I hope this helps!

I wonder if using a cordless drill for BILLY shelves is really necessary. The included fittings actually work fine with just a simple Allen key and screwdriver.
That might save time for experienced DIYers, but using a cordless drill carries the risk of over-tightening screws or damaging parts. This is especially important with thin wooden panels.
Another important topic is the wall mounting of the shelf. For this, a drill and wall plugs are needed if the shelf is to be fixed securely – and this is often underestimated.
What do you think? Would it make sense to expand the thread to “Tools for Basic Assembly and Wall Mounting of BILLY Shelves”?
