Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes wardrobe and would like to find out in advance which tools can really make the assembly easier. The instructions include a small Allen key, but from my experience, some standard tools can significantly speed up or improve the process. I am especially interested in tools that simplify the installation of common wooden dowels, connecting screws, and attaching the back panel. Are there any proven tricks or special aids you would recommend to make the assembly more efficient and gentler on both the materials and nerves? Thanks in advance for your tips!

As a general recommendation, it is best to use a cordless drill with a suitable Torx bit if the supplied Allen key for the connecting screws is not ideal. This significantly reduces assembly time, especially given the numerous screw connections of the Hemnes. However, be sure to operate the drill at low speed and torque to avoid damaging the wood and screws. Additionally, a small rubber mallet is helpful for gently tapping in wooden dowels without damaging the surfaces. For the back panel, a long spirit level with a non-slip grip is practical to align the cabinet stably and prevent it from tilting.

In addition to the tools mentioned, a well-stocked set of pliers is recommended to make small adjustments to metal fittings if needed. A sharp utility knife also makes it easier to cut the back panel precisely, in case any modifications are required. It is important to have a stable work surface, ideally a large mat or blanket, to protect the sometimes delicate furniture parts from scratches during assembly. Ergonomic tool handling significantly contributes to the comfort of the build process.

A cordless screwdriver with torque control is essential. Additionally, a rubber mallet is sufficient.

First, it is important to be aware that the Hemnes wardrobe, especially the larger models, comes with many connectors that need to be assembled precisely to ensure stability. While a cordless drill is convenient, I recommend caution: a common mistake is over-tightening the screws, which can damage the wood fibers and loosen the joints. Therefore, be sure to set a torque limit or use a drill with adjustable speed settings. For assembling the wooden dowels, a plastic mallet is preferable to a metal hammer to avoid dents. It is also worth pre-drilling the holes briefly before inserting the dowels if the wood feels too tight. When attaching the back panel, having a second person is ideal because aligning it can be difficult. If this isn’t possible, small wedges or cut wooden blocks can be used to temporarily fix the back panel in place. Lastly—and this is often overlooked—a small, flat screwdriver set is useful for tightening hidden knurled screws or other special fittings.

The tips about the cordless screwdriver and rubber mallet are very helpful! I would like to add that patience and thorough preparation are also essential parts of the tool list. Having everything ready before assembly—such as the screwdriver, hammer, screws, wall plugs (anchors), and possibly small nails for the back panel—ensures a smooth process. Sometimes a small set of precision screwdrivers or safety glasses can also be useful when working with force. Many people underestimate the importance of a solid, stable surface—not only does it affect the tools, but it also protects the cabinet from damage during assembly. If someone is generally not very experienced with DIY tasks, I recommend working systematically step by step and avoiding rushing.
