I would like to start a discussion on the topic: "Which tools make assembling Billy shelves easier?" I have some experience with the Billy shelf from IKEA, but I often find the assembly a bit cumbersome, especially when putting together multiple units in a row. I am interested in which tools you use beyond the provided Allen key to make the assembly more efficient, stable, and enjoyable. I’m not only curious about whether cordless drills or hand tools are better, but also about any special tools or aids that significantly simplify the building process. I look forward to well-founded experiences, practical tips, or recommendations for particularly useful equipment.

Question: Have you ever had problems with screws pulling out the wood? Or the shelf feeling unstable after assembly?

Thank you for the detailed response! Yes, I have often noticed that tightening the screws can sometimes cause the material to fray, which is especially frustrating on the side panels. The stability is usually adequate, but with longer shelves or additional loads, it can feel a bit shaky. This makes me wonder whether stronger or different screws might be a better solution.

I understand that it can be frustrating when the material gets damaged during assembly. A tip from my experience: take your time when tightening the screws and take breaks if you notice the wood resisting.

Sometimes it also helps to pre-drill the screw holes, for example with a thin drill bit, to reduce pressure. Although this means extra work, it protects the panels and ensures more stable connections in the long run.

Don’t stress, it’s a challenge, but with the right tools and proper patience, you’ll succeed! 🙂

I find it interesting that the discussion here mainly focuses on cordless screwdrivers and rubber mallets, while hardly anyone questions the whole concept of the Billy bookcase itself.

For me personally, using a cordless screwdriver is a good tip, but is it really sustainable to keep buying new tools just to assemble an IKEA cabinet? You could also simply use a classic screwdriver set and adjust your toolkit to be more minimalist if needed.

I see too much reliance on technology here, where simple solutions often work just as well, and people end up buying a lot of tools for a one-time assembly that they never use again. This makes me wonder: how much tooling is really "necessary" for a Billy bookcase?

In my opinion, this is a very well-asked question. The only truly necessary tool is what the manufacturer provides: the Allen key. Everything else is recommended to make assembly more comfortable and faster.

Personally, I use a small cordless screwdriver with torque control because it simply saves time and reduces hand strain. A rubber mallet and a spirit level are useful additions to the toolkit, but not mandatory. For those who prefer a minimalist approach, it is also possible to manage without them.

My conclusion: It largely depends on your skills, the time available, and especially the number of shelves to be assembled. For a single unit, a screwdriver or the included Allen key is often sufficient.
