Hello everyone, I am planning to dismantle my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and would like to know in advance which tools are absolutely necessary for this. It is the classic Hemnes model, usually assembled with common fasteners like dowels and screws. Since I prefer not to buy multiple tools, it would be great if you could provide me with a comprehensive list of tools I will need to safely take the wardrobe apart without causing any damage. Which screwdrivers, special tools, or possible aids are essential for an easy dismantling? Thanks in advance for your advice!
Thanks for the helpful feedback, especially to Jensson for the detailed instructions and tips! I now have a pretty clear idea of the tools needed:
- Phillips PH2 screwdriver (appropriate size)
- 4mm (5/32 inch) Allen key
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Possibly a cordless drill, used carefully
- Rubber mallet and plastic spatula as aids
Maybe someone has tips on the correct order for disassembly? So I don’t loosen parts in the wrong sequence and then have trouble removing them.

Maybe someone has tips on the correct order for disassembly?Yes, very important:
- Remove the drawers first!
- Always take off the back panel next, as it can sometimes jam the frame
- Then loosen the fittings to separate the side panels
- Finally, remove the shelves
Reason: This prevents parts from getting stuck or damaged during removal.
Take your time, and it’s best to document the process with phone notes in case you want to reassemble the cabinet later.
Good morning everyone, I started with the dismantling yesterday and wanted to give a quick update: The tool tips were really helpful, especially choosing the right Phillips screwdriver was crucial. By carefully loosening the cam locks, nothing got damaged. Thanks for that!
For anyone reading the thread later: Make sure to keep the screws in a safe place, otherwise it’s easy to create chaos during reassembly. I’ll tackle the cordless drill today, if needed.

For everyone who will read this thread later: Make sure to keep the screws in a safe place to avoid a mess during reassembly.Good advice! A small screw organizer or even small containers can help keep everything clearly labeled.
I’m glad the tips were helpful. If any questions come up during the next steps, just reach out.
One final experience report: The cordless screwdriver was very helpful, especially for the hard-to-reach screws. However, I learned that too much power can quickly strip the screws. So it’s better to work patiently and at a low speed. Otherwise, classic hand tools like the PH2 screwdriver are truly essential.
Thanks again to everyone for the great support here, you really saved me a lot of stress!
