Hello everyone, I am planning to dismantle my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and would like to know in advance which tools are absolutely necessary for this. It is the classic Hemnes model, usually assembled with common fasteners like dowels and screws. Since I prefer not to buy multiple tools, it would be great if you could provide me with a comprehensive list of tools I will need to safely take the wardrobe apart without causing any damage. Which screwdrivers, special tools, or possible aids are essential for an easy dismantling? Thanks in advance for your advice!

A Phillips screwdriver (PH2) and a 4mm (0.16 inch) Allen key are usually all you need. This is pretty standard with Hemnes. That’s true, but sometimes there are clips or small metal fasteners used – in those cases, a small flathead screwdriver usually helps, especially when you need to pry off back panels made of thin wood or hardboard.
Thank you very much for the quick and helpful answers! One more follow-up question: In the cabinet carcass, there are often these metal cam connectors that you turn with a screwdriver – does it matter if the screwdriver is small or large? And is there anything I should watch out for to avoid damaging or crushing the connectors?

For the cam locks in Hemnes, it’s best to use a properly sized Phillips PH2 screwdriver that matches the screw size – not too small, so you don’t round off the recesses in the metal. However, a screwdriver that’s too large can also get stuck if it doesn’t fit well.

And do I need to watch out for anything to avoid damaging or crushing the connectors?Yes, definitely turn carefully and avoid using force. If a connector won’t loosen, check again if you might need to press parts together or lift slightly. Never use excessive force or impact tools. Being too rough can damage cam locks, which is frustrating when reassembling.

I had the same experience with a Hemnes wardrobe and was glad to find helpful tips in forums that encouraged me. If something gets stuck, just take a break and try again calmly. Good luck!
