I am planning to assemble a Billy bookshelf from IKEA soon. Before I start, I would like to know: What tools do you recommend to assemble it as efficiently and smoothly as possible? I have some experience with furniture assembly, but I’m not very familiar with the specifics of the Billy system. I’m especially interested in advice regarding screwdrivers, drills, or any special tools that might help with assembly and improve stability. Are there any tools that aren’t strictly necessary but really make the process easier? I look forward to your tips and which tools you find most important at each step. Thanks in advance!

Hello teoraimo65,
To assemble the BILLY shelf, it is indeed helpful to have not only the standard tools but also some special aids on hand to work efficiently and avoid mistakes. Basically, you will need a screwdriver, ideally both a Phillips (PH2) and a flathead screwdriver. However, a cordless drill with adjustable torque is highly recommended, as it allows you to tighten the fittings on the BILLY shelf faster and more precisely without damaging the material.
You should also have a hammer ready, especially for the dowels that are hammered into the shelf. A small rubber mallet is best for this because it is gentle and does not leave marks. If you want to pre-drill holes, for example for additional shelves or for mounting the shelf to the wall, a small twist drill bit matching the diameter of the dowels is advisable.
Furthermore, a square or a spirit level is very useful to align the shelf properly and install it stably. A spirit level is especially important if you plan to secure the shelf to the wall.
Yes, definitely! A cordless screwdriver simplifies the work a lot and saves time. Also, a small selection of wood glue can be helpful for less stable constructions, for example if the shelf is expected to carry heavier loads. A small set of clamps can assist in holding parts in place before screwing them together.
What exactly are your plans? Do you want to just assemble the shelf, or also modify or reinforce it? Then I could give you more targeted advice.

To provide a more detailed answer to the question: The BILLY shelf is structurally quite simple, but the connecting elements and their precise fit are crucial for stability. The screws and dowels provided are standard; however, using a power screwdriver with adjustable torque, as Palenar mentioned, can help prevent damage, especially when working with soft materials.
It is important to set the torque low to avoid damaging the cam lock or causing the board material to crumble.
A small file or sanding block can also be useful if the edges of the boards are slightly uneven to ensure a good fit. When attaching the back panels, I particularly recommend some patience and a narrow wooden mallet to avoid dents.
Additionally, pay attention to the wall mounting. Here, an appropriate drill (depending on the wall: hammer drill for concrete, cordless drill for drywall with suitable wall anchors) and sufficient wall plugs and screws are essential.
If you plan to upgrade your BILLY shelf, for example with additional shelves or a door, special bits or small clamps can sometimes be helpful.

A cordless screwdriver is helpful but not essential. That is correct. For BILLY, a well-functioning Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient. A hammer (preferably rubber) for anchors and wood glue as additional tools are enough.

Set the torque lowThis should be taken seriously, as overtightening can damage components.
A spirit level and a square are recommended for assembly and alignment, even though they are often underestimated.
Hey everyone,
I really appreciate how detailed the discussions about tools are! Building my first BILLY was overwhelming at first, but with the right tools, it goes really quickly!
My tip: definitely get a cordless drill – it’s a gamechanger 🙂 It saves not only nerves but a lot of time! And grab a spirit level to make sure the shelf is perfectly straight – it not only looks better but also prevents wobbling!
What I also found really helpful: I borrowed small clamps when fitting the shelves. That keeps everything secure and prevents any slipping.
Have fun with your project, it will surely turn out great! 🙂
