Hello everyone,

I recently bought some Ikea Brimnes furniture and have already assembled it. Unfortunately, a few parts are already showing wear or minor damage, such as stripped screws or slightly loose joints.

I don’t want to replace the furniture completely but rather repair it selectively. That’s why I’m asking the community: Based on your experience, which tools are truly useful and effective for repairing Ikea Brimnes furniture?

I’m especially interested in practical advice regarding the types of screws, any special tools beyond the standard Allen key, and other equipment that can help when fixing or reinforcing the furniture.

I would appreciate specific recommendations as well as tips on how to approach the repairs.

In my opinion, all other tools are optional additions, not essentials.

That is basically true, but I would add that when screws are damaged or the connection is no longer stable, additional tools and materials often make a difference. Especially with minor damages, a targeted repair using wood glue, dowel replacement, or filler pays off to prevent wobbling from happening again.

Regarding stripped screws: Having a set of replacement screws from a hardware store with the appropriate screw types (Allen, Phillips) is useful. A screw extractor set can also be helpful.

Without the right replacement parts, repairs are often difficult.

For stabilizing Brimnes drawers or frames, I also recommend:
- Small metal corner brackets
- Appropriate mounting tape (such as double-sided adhesive tape for securing smaller parts before screwing)

These tools are often helpful when conventional screw connections alone are not sufficient.

That’s a good point. Especially with slight material fatigue, such reinforcements can significantly extend the lifespan of the furniture.

However, care should be taken that the stability is not just superficially improved, but that functionality and appearance are preserved. Sometimes, the only solution is to replace damaged parts.

Sometimes only replacing damaged parts helps.

That's correct, but often a simple repair using an Allen key and the appropriate wood glue is enough. Ordering new parts is usually the last resort.

Thank you very much for the many helpful responses! This gives me a good overview.

I think I will first get a good selection of hex bits and screwdrivers along with a small cordless drill. Additionally, I will try wood glue and small repair kits in case dowels become loose or cracks appear.

If that no longer helps, I’ll keep angle brackets and spare parts in mind as a backup option.

I also find the tip about the torque setting on the cordless drill very valuable to avoid overtightening screws.

I will report back on how it goes – thanks to everyone!
