Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and noticed during assembly that some screws and parts are not fitting tightly anymore – there are also slight deformations visible during the build. I would like to know, in general: Which tools are particularly useful and recommended when making repairs on furniture from the Hemnes series by IKEA?

I am specifically looking for information on types of tools suitable for the classic Hemnes materials (mostly wood or wood fiberboard with a painted finish) or typical fasteners used. Perhaps you can also suggest specific hand tools or even power tools that can significantly simplify the repair process or help prevent damage to the furniture.

I would appreciate any tips, recommendations, and advice on how to avoid common mistakes when doing these types of repairs!

Hey, first of all, great that you’re confident to tackle repairs – that usually offers the best CO2 footprint 😄! For IKEA Hemnes, I usually have a few basics ready:

- A cordless drill with various bits – this makes tightening and loosening screws quick and easy. But be careful, too much torque can easily damage the wood.
- A good hex key (Allen wrench) that fits the screws exactly. Often these are size 4 or 5, depending on the furniture piece.
- Screwdrivers for Phillips and flathead screws, in case there are different types included.

And very important: a small spirit level. Hemnes shelves, in particular, should be as level as possible to prevent stress on the joints.

What I also find invaluable: some extra screws and wooden dowels as replacements in case any strip out or break. Without spare parts, you’re often stuck. All in all, this is usually enough, and the furniture ends up sturdier than before 😉.

[@deostefano] Good question, and the answer varies depending on the extent of the repairs. I’m assuming the repair on the Hemnes involves not only mechanical stability but may also include surface care.

For basic repairs, here is my detailed recommendation for tools and materials:

- Cordless drill with adjustable torque settings: This is essential because IKEA furniture often uses particleboard or MDF panels, which are sensitive to over-tightening.
- Set of Allen (hex) keys and Torx keys: Some fasteners use these, and a suitable set usually covers most cases.
- Wood glue (water-resistant and fast-drying): Ideal for gluing loosened wooden parts or loose dowels.
- Wood filler or putty: In case small scratches or dents need filling.
- A file or sandpaper (grit 120-240): For smoothing edges or repair areas.
- Rubber mallet: Allows you to gently tap dowels or wooden parts into place without damaging the surface.
- Screwdrivers (crosshead/Phillips) in various sizes.
- Possibly clamps, if parts need to be held firmly while gluing.

One question: How extensive is the damage so far? Is it “just” loose screws, or are wooden joints broken or the finish damaged? This makes a difference in which tools are absolutely necessary.

The importance of preparation is often underestimated: Thoroughly clean and inspect all parts before repair to avoid problems later.

For Hemnes, the following applies:

- Allen keys (4 and 5 mm) for most screws.
- Phillips screwdriver.
- Cordless drill/driver for easier screwing.
- Wood glue for loose wood.

This is usually sufficient.

Adding to this important question: For the Hemnes series, the material composition is crucial when selecting tools. Here are some precise guidelines:

- Most Hemnes models are made of solid wood combined with MDF components, making screwdrivers with precise torque control essential.
- An Allen key set (4, 5 mm) should always be at hand for screw connections.
- A torque wrench is generally not necessary, but a cordless drill with adjustable torque settings helps prevent over-tightening.
- Aliphatic resin wood glue (fast-drying, flexible) is recommended for repairing cracks or loose joints.

In conclusion: Paying attention to material compatibility when choosing tools is key for long-lasting repairs.

If damaged parts need to be replaced, original IKEA replacement parts are usually best suited, as their tolerances are exact.
