Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an Ikea Platsa wardrobe but am unsure which tools are truly recommended to ensure a safe and efficient build. Ikea, of course, provides an Allen key, but is that really enough, or is it worth having additional tools on hand? I am especially interested in whether a cordless drill/driver is useful, what accessories are needed for installing the back panels and doors, and if any special tools are recommended for fitting it into a wall niche. It would also be helpful to know if certain tools can help prevent damage to the components or make the assembly significantly easier. I look forward to your experiences and tips!

For assembling the Platsa, I recommend a good cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque. The hex key from Ikea is sufficient for smaller screws, but a cordless screwdriver saves time and effort. Additionally, you should have a hammer ready for the nails on the back panel. That’s basically all you need.

Regarding tools for assembling the Ikea Platsa, I would like to add the following: A cordless drill with the appropriate bits (4mm hex) is very useful, but it is also important to have a set of small screwdrivers in case adjustments to the hinges are needed. For precise alignment, especially of the doors, squares or a spirit level are suitable. This is particularly helpful when the cabinet is installed in a recess, as a sturdy spirit level can help avoid fitting issues later on. A rubber mallet is also recommended to gently join parts without causing damage.

First, regarding the initial question: Which tools are recommended for assembling the Ikea Platsa? Since you already know that an Allen wrench is included, that’s a good start, but for a smooth process there are a few additional tools that are useful.

Step 1: Screwdriving tools
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is the biggest time and effort saver. Make sure you have the right bits, usually 4 mm (approx. 5/32 inch) hex key bits. These are essential for most connections.
- A small Phillips screwdriver should not be missing, as screws for hinges often have Phillips heads.

Step 2: Aligning and assembling
- A spirit level is indispensable, especially when fitting Platsa units into a niche to avoid distortion.
- Squares or stops for adjusting the frames are helpful, particularly for the doors, to ensure they close tightly.

Step 3: Back panel and components
- For the thin back panel, nails are sometimes needed. I recommend using a rubber mallet instead of a regular hammer to avoid dents or cracks in the material.

Step 4: Additional aids
- A cordless drill with torque control protects against overdriving screws and prevents damage.
- Soft cloths or cardboard as underlays protect surfaces during assembly.

It would be helpful to know if the unit will be fixed to the wall, as that requires a drill plus wall plugs/anchors and screws. A follow-up question: Are you planning to place the cabinet freestanding or built into a niche with wall fastening?

Thank you for the detailed response! Yes, exactly, I plan to install the Platsa as a built-in cabinet within a niche, where securing it to the back wall or adjacent wall is recommended to increase stability and prevent tipping hazards. The walls are concrete, so I assume I will need a hammer drill or at least a regular drill. My question is whether, based on your experience, special accessories like anchors and long screws can be purchased directly from Ikea, or if it’s better to buy high-quality materials from a hardware store? One more related question: For installing the doors, adjustable hinges are often used — which tools are particularly useful to ensure precise adjustment without forcing anything?

I want to focus especially on wall mounting, as it is crucial for stability and safety.

- A rotary hammer drill or hammer drill with a masonry bit is essential for concrete walls to reliably make the holes for the anchors.
- The quality of anchors and screws affects load capacity: I recommend using special heavy-duty anchors or at least high-strength universal anchors with matching screws. Ikea anchor kits are often designed more for lightweight construction and are not ideal for concrete.
- To adjust the hinges, have both flathead and Phillips screwdrivers ready, preferably also precision screwdrivers, since some hinges allow very fine adjustments.
- Additionally, a small Torx screwdriver can be helpful for some Ikea fittings, depending on the model.

Door installation is often the trickiest part, and the rule here is: do not force anything, first insert all screws loosely, align everything, then tighten. Having the right tools and some patience is important for smooth door operation.

Summary: For installation in the niche, your toolkit should at least include:

- Cordless drill with hex (Allen) and Phillips bits
- Rotary hammer drill with masonry bit
- High-quality heavy-duty anchors
- Rubber mallet
- Spirit level
- Depending on hinge type, small precision screwdrivers
