LutztoHello everyone,
I am about to assemble the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe and wonder which tools are truly useful and recommended for the assembly. The IKEA instructions include an Allen key, but do you need any additional tools, such as a screwdriver, cordless drill, hammer, or pliers?
It is important for me to ensure an efficient and safe assembly without having to use an excessive tool set or risk damaging screws. So: Which tools have proven to be genuinely indispensable and helpful when assembling the IKEA BRIMNES?
I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Which tools have proven to be really essential and helpful when assembling the IKEA BRIMNES?To be honest, I think the importance of tools is often overrated. The BRIMNES is designed so that the included hex key is theoretically sufficient. However, it really makes sense to use a good cordless drill during assembly. Most people use hand tools and then complain about sore muscles.
Hammer? Well, maybe if you’re tacking the back panels, but even that can be done carefully by hand. A screwdriver is only useful if you want to tighten screws manually or if the cordless drill is set too strong.
My advice: A cordless drill with adjustable torque and a Phillips screwdriver are the only tools that really make a difference.
I would like to go into some technical detail here, as the BRIMNES, despite its apparent simplicity, uses a variety of fasteners and attachment methods.
- The included Allen key is quite small and intended for precisely tightening the connection screws. While it is possible to use it continuously, it can be tiring.
- A cordless drill with an adjustable torque setting ensures that the screws are not over-tightened or the wood panels damaged. This is important because the particle boards are delicate.
- A standard Phillips screwdriver is useful for areas that are hard to reach with the cordless drill.
- A small hammer can be helpful when gently tapping the back panels into the groove joint. It is important to tap lightly to avoid dents.
Question for you: Do you work alone or with a partner? Because this affects how many screws can be carefully installed at once.

A cordless screwdriver with an adjustable torque setting ensures that screws are not overtightened or that the wood panels are damaged.I want to emphasize this point. Especially with BRIMNES, the material thickness is often critical, so tightening too much can cause damage.
- I also recommend having a suitable set of bits that includes not only a Phillips but also a flathead and Allen (hex) bits, in case one is damaged or difficult to use.
- If you want to work precisely, a small right-angle screwdriver can be helpful to reach tight corners.
- It’s also worth having a spirit level ready before starting. Especially with cabinets of this construction, you should align the assembly accurately so that the doors don’t stick or the cabinet isn’t crooked later on.
I would also be interested to know if you plan to anchor or fix the cabinet to the wall. Then tools and materials might need to be added.
Short and clear:
- A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque is recommended to prevent damage to the material from over-tightening.
- The included tools are generally sufficient but impractical for heavier use.
- A hammer is needed for the back panel to drive in the thin nails if the back panel material is nailed.
- As an additional tool, a rubber mallet can help protect delicate surfaces during assembly.
These are the only really useful extras. Other tools do not offer any advantage with BRIMNES.

Which tools have proven to be truly essential and helpful when assembling the IKEA BRIMNES?For assembling the BRIMNES, I would definitely recommend the following tools, although some can be replaced by multifunctional tools:
- Cordless drill, preferably with adjustable torque settings to avoid over-tightening the screws
- Phillips screwdriver for fine adjustments and tight spaces
- Small hammer to secure the back panels
- Spirit level to ensure the cabinet is properly aligned
I also found that having an extra pair of hands really saves time and frustration. If you are working alone, choosing the right tools becomes even more important to optimize accessibility and reduce effort.
Important: The supplied screws and fasteners are not designed for rough handling, so you should work carefully and precisely with your tools.
