Hello everyone,

I have assembled several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and am currently adjusting the doors. I noticed that adjusting the doors can be quite challenging, especially if you don’t have the right tools or aids on hand.

I’m interested in hearing: Which tools have you found particularly practical and helpful when adjusting Metod cabinet doors?

I’m especially looking for advice on accuracy, ease of use, and whether there are any special tools that go beyond the included screwdriver.

Are there any tips on specific attachments or supplementary devices that make the adjustment easier or more precise?

Thank you very much for your support!

Hello sotra,

Regarding your question: For adjusting the IKEA Metod cabinet doors, the basic tools are primarily a Phillips screwdriver and a small hex key (Allen wrench), since most hinges can be adjusted with these. IKEA usually includes a small screwdriver, which is sufficient for initial adjustments.

Personally, I find it very convenient to use a ratchet with the appropriate bits. The ratchet allows for faster and more precise adjustments because you don’t have to completely remove and reposition the screwdriver each time.

Additionally, a good measuring tape or protractor helps align multiple doors side by side to ensure uniform gaps.

If the doors are particularly difficult to adjust, an LED flashlight can be useful for better visibility inside the hinge mechanism.

In general: patience is the most important thing, and having a few extra screwdriver bits never hurts!

Hey sotra, that’s a great question! 😊

I love working with the right tools because it makes everything much easier! For Metod cabinet doors, the small screwdriver included is often not enough. I highly recommend a small cordless drill with adjustable torque — they are really handy, allowing you to tighten screws precisely without overdriving them!

Even better: small bit sets with Phillips, hex, and flathead attachments so you’re prepared for any situation.

And a small level attachment for the cordless drill is also great, helping you get the doors perfectly straight.

Don’t stress, it took me a little while too until everything fit perfectly, but with the right tools, it’s really fun! 👍

For precise adjustment of IKEA Metod cabinet doors, I recommend the following tools:

- Phillips screwdriver size PH2 (matching the screw heads)
- 2.5mm (0.1 inch) Allen key for fine tuning
- Fine-toothed ratchet with compatible bits
- Spirit level to check door alignment

The Metod hinges generally allow for three adjustments:
- Height adjustment (usually via screws on the mounting plate)
- Lateral adjustment (to align the gap between the doors)
- Depth adjustment (to set the distance between the door and the cabinet carcass)

It is advisable to follow a systematic sequence when adjusting: start with height correction, then adjust the lateral position, and finally set the depth.

Using a ratchet allows screws to be adjusted more quickly and evenly compared to just the included screwdriver.

Hello sotra,

I would like to offer a detailed perspective on tool selection for adjusting IKEA Metod cabinet doors, based on my professional experience with installation and fine-tuning.

The IKEA Metod system uses specially designed hinges with three main adjustment axes:

- Height adjustment
- Side-to-side adjustment (left/right)
- Depth adjustment (clamping pressure)

In terms of tools, you need the right equipment to precisely operate all these adjustment points.

1. Phillips screwdriver (PH2) – preferably with a thin, long shaft to easily reach into the narrow hinge mount.
2. Precision hex key (2 – 2.5 mm) – some Metod hinges have smaller adjustment screws that require this size.
3. Ratchet with suitable bits – for controlled and quick work.
4. A small cordless drill with fine speed control and torque settings to avoid over-tightening screws or damaging the fasteners.

Additionally, it’s often helpful to have a good light source and a slim flashlight, as the hinges are installed deep inside the cabinet.

Another tip: a small spirit level or angle finder can be useful to ensure precise alignment of multiple doors and consistent gap spacing.

If you’re interested, what tools do you currently use? Do you have any specialized tools or just the IKEA set?

Thanks for the detailed post! At the moment, I’m mainly using the small screwdriver included, as I wasn’t sure which additional tools are truly necessary and which are just nice to have.

I do have a small hex key that I use for other furniture, but with Metod, I had some trouble whether it actually fits properly.

I don’t have a ratchet specifically for this purpose, but maybe I could try a set. The tip about a spirit level and good lighting is helpful; I hadn’t thought about that at all until now.

Do you have any recommendations for compact ratchets that work well for delicate tasks in the kitchen?
