Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes piece of furniture (specifically a sideboard) and want to prepare well in advance to ensure the assembly goes smoothly. Therefore, my question is: which tools are particularly useful for assembling Ikea Hemnes and noticeably make the process easier? I am not looking for general advice, but rather specific recommendations on hand tools that have proven effective or perhaps small aids that one wouldn’t necessarily expect. If you have experience with this, it would be great if you could also mention common pitfalls that can be avoided with certain tools. Thanks in advance!

whether there might be affordable tools that make assembly less fiddly or help avoid situations where mistakes happen quickly.

Definitely: yes, there are! For example, a torque limiter for a cordless drill is a simple investment that prevents screws from being driven in too deeply and damaging the material. A combination plier can also be useful for tightening small screws or positioning nails. For most beginners, having a guide with short clips (a step-by-step explanation on paper or digital) is also worthwhile, as it allows you to double-check along the way. This significantly reduces the chances of errors.

I really appreciate how clearly you discuss the tools here. When I assembled my first piece of furniture, the Hemnes, I was quite unsure and afraid of making mistakes. The tips about using a rubber mallet and torque settings are great; that’s exactly how I felt when I was finally able to work carefully and precisely. I just wanted to say: It’s completely normal to feel uncertain during assembly – what matters is not giving up!

In addition to the standard tools, I like to use a small cordless drill with a depth stop. This helps to better control the applied force. A small vise or an assistant to hold parts in place also makes many tasks easier – especially when working alone.

I have all the tools I need in a small set at home: a Phillips bit attachment, rubber mallet, spirit level, and cordless drill with torque control. So far, this has always been sufficient for me. By the way, if you often assemble flat-pack furniture, a ratchet set is easier to use than regular screwdrivers.

A small spirit level or ruler is essential for aligning and checking evenness.

I basically agree with that but would like to point out that you shouldn’t rely too much on a small spirit level. It can be inaccurate, especially with inexpensive models. If you want precise results, you should get a high-quality spirit level or at least verify the final result with a long straightedge. This is particularly important for furniture like the Hemnes series, which stays in the living space, as irregularities become much more noticeable later if it tilts or doesn’t fit properly.

Also: Using a cordless screwdriver is faster but carries the risk of damaging furniture parts due to uncontrolled torque, as already mentioned above. Perhaps it’s better to use the screwdriver at a low speed or even screw by hand.
