Hello everyone, I am planning to disassemble some Ikea Brimnes furniture pieces for transport and reassembly. My question is: which tools are actually necessary to safely and completely dismantle the different components of the BRIMNES series? I am especially interested in whether standard household tools will suffice or if special tools are needed. I would appreciate a detailed list, including any information about specific screws or connection methods used in this series. Thanks in advance!

Great question, roik57! 🙂 The BRIMNES furniture can actually be taken apart easily with common household tools, which makes the whole process much more manageable! You’ll mainly need a Phillips screwdriver (PH2), since most of Ikea’s screws are Phillips head. An Allen key can also be useful in case Ikea used hex screws. Usually, these keys are included in the furniture packaging if you still have it.

I also recommend having a pair of pliers on hand in case something gets stuck or you need a better grip on a screw. If you have a larger project, a cordless drill with a Phillips bit is a real power tool that will save you a lot of time!

Good luck with disassembling it—you’ll definitely manage!

In summary, the disassembly of the Ikea BRIMNES series can be approached as follows:
- The main tool needed is a Phillips screwdriver size PH2, as the standard particleboard screws used by Ikea have this type of head.
- A hex key (Allen wrench), possibly 4 mm (approximately 5/32 inches), which is often used for connector fittings, is also useful.
- A small hammer or a rubber mallet can help loosen connectors if they are stuck.
- Optionally, pliers are recommended for holding or turning parts that are difficult to move.

The screws and connectors used in the BRIMNES series are not proprietary special parts but standard industrial fittings, so common tools are sufficient. If the original hex key is not available, these can be easily found in hardware stores or tool kits.

You will mainly need:
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2)
- Allen key (4 mm)
- Pliers
- Optional hammer or rubber mallet
With these, you are fully equipped.

I would like to provide more detailed advice on disassembling Ikea BRIMNES furniture, as I have some tips based on many years of experience:

First, a commonly used Phillips screwdriver (PH2) is essential, since Ikea mostly uses chipboard screws with this type of screw head on BRIMNES furniture. You will find many of these, especially in drawer inserts and back panels. Depending on how tight these screws are, I recommend using an ergonomic screwdriver or a cordless drill with adjustable speed to avoid damaging the screw heads.

For the internal connecting elements – often called cam locks and brackets – typically a 4-mm Allen (hex) key is needed. These components are important as they ensure stability. Sometimes they are tightened quite firmly because the furniture is partially pre-assembled at the factory. In such cases, it can help to use a high-quality Allen key, preferably with a longer lever arm, to apply the necessary torque.

A plastic or rubber mallet is also important. Especially with the side panels or back panels of the BRIMNES system, the connecting elements can be very tight – gentle tapping can help loosen them without causing scratches or damage.

For safety, I also recommend a combination plier, which not only holds fasteners but can also assist if screws get stuck or if you need to grip nuts.

Finally, a quick question: Are you planning to disassemble the furniture completely or only partially (e.g., drawers and fronts)? Depending on this, the list of tools required might vary, as some modules have fewer screws or connectors.

As an addition, I would like to mention that with BRIMNES furniture it is quite useful to organize the individual screws and fittings clearly to avoid confusion during reassembly. Small containers or magnetic screw holders can be helpful for this.

Regarding tools: If you don’t have a cordless drill, a good Phillips screwdriver is sufficient, INGON (see quote).

I completely agree with this; a cheap mini version doesn’t always last long.

Also, when handling BRIMNES furniture, be especially careful with the back panels, as they are usually attached with nails or thin screws that can easily break if too much force is applied.

If you like, I can also quickly give you some tips on how to best remove the back panels.
