kipiruHello everyone, I have some Hemnes furniture from IKEA at home and would like to start regular maintenance and care to keep it in good condition for as long as possible. My question specifically concerns which tools and supplies I need for this. Are there any special tools particularly suitable for Hemnes furniture, or is a basic set of tools sufficient? I’m also interested in recommended care products and any accessories – I especially want to know how to repair small scratches or how to best check and tighten screws and joints. Thank you in advance for your detailed tips and experiences!

GUMARTINA3 Mar 2019 19:02For the care of IKEA Hemnes furniture, I recommend: - a Phillips screwdriver for screws - a soft cloth for wiping - furniture polish or wood oil for the finish - if necessary, small sanding polishing pads for light scratches. You don’t need anything more.
The topic of tools and maintenance for Hemnes furniture is more complex than it might initially seem. Hemnes is mostly made of solid pine wood, which requires some special care.
Regarding tools:
- A good medium-sized Phillips screwdriver is essential, as most connections are fastened this way. Avoid cheap screwdrivers, as the screws can quickly become stripped.
- An Allen key is rarely needed because IKEA usually does not use hexagonal socket screws for Hemnes, but having a small set of bits is never a bad idea.
- For scratches, fine sandpaper (grit 220-400) is recommended to carefully make repairs without damaging the surface.
- Wood filler or matching wax sticks are useful to visually conceal minor imperfections.
- For cleaning, only mild soap solutions and a soft cotton cloth should be used, as aggressive cleaners can damage the surface.
Tightening screws is important: check the connections after 3-6 months, since wood changes over time and screws may loosen.
It would be helpful to know the age of your furniture and how heavily it is used to provide more specific advice.

I would like to provide a brief guide on how to properly care for Hemnes furniture:
1. Tool Selection:
- Phillips screwdriver: Essential for tightening screws during assembly and later maintenance.
- Soft cloths (cotton or microfiber): For removing dust and light dirt.
- Fine sandpaper (grit 320 or higher): To gently smooth out minor scratches.
- Wood wax sticks or repair kits for wooden furniture: Since Hemnes is usually lacquered, colored wax sticks help to conceal scratches.
2. Care Process:
- First, wipe off dust with a damp cloth, avoiding soaking the surface.
- Lightly sand small scratches and treat them with a wax stick. Do not sand too aggressively, as this can damage the lacquer layer.
- Check screws at all joints with the screwdriver and tighten them slightly if needed (but not too tightly).
Common mistakes I often see include using harsh cleaning agents or overly coarse sandpaper, which can harm the surface. I also recommend using furniture oil sparingly, as Hemnes is lacquered and excessive oil can damage the finish.
In conclusion: A combination of a good screwdriver, polishing materials, and careful maintenance is usually sufficient. If anyone has specific questions, I’m happy to help!

For scratches, fine sandpaper (grit 220-400) is recommended to carefully make repairs without damaging the surface.I consider that risky because Hemnes furniture usually has a lacquered or protective glaze finish. Even fine sandpaper can damage the lacquer coating and, in the worst case, worsen the appearance of the furniture.
Instead, I would prefer to use furniture waxes or repair markers specifically designed for lacquered wood surfaces.

Don’t sand too hard, or you’ll destroy the lacquer layer. As described here, you should be very careful. My recommendation: sanding should only be considered as a last resort and ideally done by a paint or lacquer restoration specialist.
Do you have any experience with alternative tools or care products that work particularly well with Hemnes furniture?

Even fine sandpaper can damage the finish and, in the worst case, negatively affect the appearance of the furniture. That’s a helpful tip, thanks! To be more precise: my Hemnes dresser is about 5 years old, located in the bedroom, and used daily, but there is no heavy damage—only minor signs of wear and a few shallow scratches from keys, etc. My goal is to preserve the surface and carry out as little invasive maintenance as possible.

Also, how often should I really check or tighten the screws? I want to avoid unnecessary assembling and disassembling since the wood underneath also undergoes stress.
