Hello everyone, I’m currently planning to assemble my new Ikea Hemnes built-in wardrobe myself and am wondering which tools are truly essential for the assembly. Ikea usually provides a small hex key, but from experience, that is often not enough to put the furniture together efficiently and neatly. I’m especially interested in the tools that are best suited for properly fastening the various wooden parts, hinges, screws, and mounting rails. Are there specific drills, screwdrivers, or other aids that you definitely shouldn’t be without when assembling the Hemnes wardrobe? I want to have everything ready in advance to ensure the assembly goes as smoothly as possible.

Hello Jemeru, your question is very good because when assembling the Ikea Hemnes built-in furniture, you should focus on a few specific tools to ensure a proper installation.

- Allen keys (hex keys): Although one is usually included, it is often very small. I recommend getting a suitable set of Allen keys so you can screw without hurting your hands.
- Cordless screwdriver: Very helpful, as many screws are long and you don’t want to turn them in by hand. Choose a model with adjustable torque to avoid overtightening the screws.
- Phillips screwdriver: Useful for tightening individual screws after assembly – it’s especially good for adjusting hinges.
- Spirit level: This helps prevent the wardrobe from standing crooked.
- Drill with small wood drill bits: In case you need to pre-drill, for example for dowels or hinges on the cabinet frame.

In my opinion, with these tools you will be very well prepared. If you need more details, just let me know!

I would say that besides the Ikea hex key, you definitely need a cordless drill with the appropriate bit and a Phillips screwdriver. This saves a lot of time and frustration.

Interesting question, especially since Ikea products are generally designed to be easy to assemble. Still, the question remains whether a simple Allen key is enough to securely fasten the often quite long screws in the Hemnes cabinets—or if it might be better to invest in a small drill with a screwdriver attachment.

I agree, the cordless screwdriver is definitely a key tool because the Hemnes construction has a few spots where you need to screw precisely and with consistent force.

But I’m also wondering if you need tools for aligning and adjusting the doors. Are leveling tools specifically recommended here, or is a simple spirit level sufficient? And how important is a small rubber mallet for gently tapping the dowels into place?

Based on the assembly instructions for the Ikea Hemnes, it is recommended to have the following tools ready:

- Allen keys (in various sizes, depending on the screws)
- Cordless drill/driver with adjustable torque setting
- Phillips screwdriver size PH2
- Spirit level for alignment
- Rubber mallet to gently set wooden dowels/blocks
- Drill with a 5mm (3/16 inch) wood bit (for dowel pilot holes)

This is the minimum tool set required to securely assemble the components and make adjustments. Using a cordless drill/driver significantly reduces assembly time and helps prevent screw over-tightening.

It is advisable to ensure a stable working surface and adequate lighting during installation. Using a spirit level is essential for perfectly aligning the cabinet front—especially when adjusting the doors.

I understand that you have some concerns about the tools. I installed the Hemnes built-in unit last year and would have appreciated better advice beforehand. For me, the cordless screwdriver was a real game changer. The small IKEA Allen key quickly causes hand cramps.

I also found a good screwdriver important for properly adjusting the hinges, as that part is quite fiddly and requires some finesse.

I completely agree with that. Additionally, I recommend going through all the screw points beforehand and preparing all the parts so you don’t have to keep running back and forth.
