Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe myself and want to make sure I have all the necessary tools ready to complete the process as smoothly as possible, without annoying interruptions due to missing tools. My question is: Which tools are essential for assembling the Ikea Hemnes? I’m not looking for recommendations on specialty tools, but rather the basic tools you absolutely need to ensure the assembly goes without problems. So far, I have considered a screwdriver, hammer, and possibly a cordless drill, but I’m uncertain whether I should have more tools on hand or if certain tools are especially useful because of the provided screws and fittings. Do you have any tips or experiences on what I should definitely pay attention to?

For the Hemnes, you definitely need a Phillips screwdriver size PH2. A hammer is also useful for wall plugs. You can use a cordless drill, but it is not absolutely necessary; manual work is possible as well.

I would like to provide a more detailed response, as assembling the Hemnes has some particular challenges. Generally, I recommend the following set of tools:
- Phillips screwdriver PH2: This is used the most, as most screws in IKEA cabinets have a Phillips head.
- A small hammer: For inserting wood dowels and metal nails for the back panel. You should be careful to avoid damage.
- An Allen wrench (often unfortunately not included): Some connections, especially in newer furniture designs, use hex screws. IKEA usually includes the appropriate wrench.
- Optional but very helpful: A small cordless drill/driver with adjustable torque. However, this can sometimes be a curse on the back panel and intricate parts if too much force is applied.
- Possibly wood glue, in case the wood dowels become loose or extra stability is needed.
It is important to be gentle with the back panels, as they are thin and tear easily. Avoid over-tightening long screws! In summary: A good Phillips screwdriver and hammer are definitely needed; the rest can help but are not essential.

I can understand your uncertainty very well. I felt similarly overwhelmed when assembling my first Hemnes, and it was a bit challenging. What helped me was finding a quiet moment before starting and having all the parts ready. I found a Phillips screwdriver particularly important, because without it, frustration builds up quickly when screws slip or the heads get damaged. The hammer also proved very useful since the wall plugs don’t always fit as expected. Don’t forget: a bit of patience goes a long way, and if something goes wrong, it’s not the end of the world—just refer back to the instructions. I wish you good luck and hope you’ll soon enjoy the finished result!

I can only agree – I do use cordless screwdrivers, but I always set the torque very low to protect the material. It is also advisable to follow the instructions carefully and only tighten the screws lightly at first until all parts are assembled. A small rubber mallet is better than a regular one when inserting anchors because it protects the surface. Additionally, a stable work surface is often underestimated; working on level surfaces makes building much more enjoyable.

As a supplement, I would like to emphasize the importance of using the right screwdriver: Ikea mostly uses Phillips PH2 screws, so a high-quality screwdriver or bit is crucial to prevent stripping the screws. This saves time and avoids rework.
The hammer is mainly needed for the wooden dowels and the thin nails on the back panel. Care is required when handling dowels to avoid damage or misalignment, as this can affect stability.
A cordless drill can speed up the work but should be used with the torque control function to prevent damage.
In short: Phillips PH2 screwdriver, hammer, and a cordless drill (with low torque) if needed. Additionally, I recommend preparing your workspace so that all parts are clearly organized – this prevents searching and frustrating interruptions.
