I would like to start a discussion on the topic: Which tools are essential for assembling the IKEA Hemnes furniture? I’m particularly interested in which tools are truly necessary to complete the assembly efficiently, safely, and without major issues. In your experience, which tools are absolutely required and which are more optional? Also, which aids significantly simplify the process, even if they are not strictly required according to the instructions? Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there is any manufacturer software or apps that can be useful beyond the standard tools.

You definitely need the following tools: Phillips screwdriver, hex key (usually included), hammer, spirit level. Spirit level? For a shelf like Hemnes? Sounds over the top. These products are designed to tolerate minor mistakes without problems. I think a standard screwdriver is enough, and maybe a hammer. Everything else is either a luxury or typical overcautiousness. A real professional can tell when something is off – so no spirit level, thanks.
Sometimes I like to provoke here, but seriously: anyone who actually needs all these tools underestimates how sturdy IKEA furniture is designed.

Level? For a shelf like HEMNES? Sounds exaggerated. I partly agree here. For small shelves, I don’t need a level either, but especially large cabinets with doors should be aligned properly. Otherwise, the door won’t close correctly. A hammer, a Phillips screwdriver, and a hex key are usually enough.

Spirit level? For a shelf like HEMNES? Sounds excessive. A spirit level is important not only for the construction itself but also for aligning the furniture on the wall later, especially for larger pieces like the HEMNES wardrobe. Even a slight tilt can cause constant pressure on moving parts and may damage doors. I strongly recommend not underestimating this.

Also, it would be helpful to know if there are manufacturer software or apps that can be useful beyond traditional tools. By the way, there isn’t a dedicated IKEA app that replaces tools, but IKEA Place or similar AR apps help with preliminary planning and positioning in the room, which can be quite useful for furniture like HEMNES to minimize adjustments later on.
Good point from Domau0. Adding to the tools: when building on site, it is often helpful to have a small terminal block or cable tie ready in case you want to create temporary support structures for alignment. Securing parts on site especially makes assembly easier. Textile gloves can also be very useful to improve grip and avoid damaging the surface of the furniture. Regarding cordless screwdrivers: be sure to set a low torque so that screws are not driven too deep into the wood. I would also like to know if you plan to fix the furniture to the wall, as special tools like a drill and wall plugs (anchors) will be useful for that.
