Hello everyone,

I recently acquired some furniture pieces from the Ikea Hemnes series, which unfortunately already show some signs of wear and minor damage. I’m interested in which tools, based on your experience, are especially important when repairing such furniture yourself. I’m not just talking about tightening screws but also about fixing blemishes like scratches, small cracks, or swollen edges.

Of course, I have basic tools available, but I’m wondering if there are any specific specialty tools or materials you would recommend for Hemnes furniture to carry out repairs properly and durably. Also, any tips for reassembling more complex parts would be appreciated.

I would be glad to hear your well-founded opinions and recommendations!

Hello son59,

First of all, I think your question is very well formulated, and focusing on specific repair needs like scratches and cracks is really sensible.

In general, for Ikea HEMNES furniture, which is mainly made from solid pine with a painted surface, I recommend the following tools and materials:

- Quality screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), preferably with ergonomic handles to provide good torque without slipping
- A set of hex keys (Allen wrenches), since some connections often use hex bolts
- A hammer or rubber mallet for gently aligning and assembling the furniture without causing damage
- Sandpaper in various grits (from 120 to 320) to prepare edges and surfaces for refinishing
- Wood filler or putty to fill small cracks or dents – it’s important that this adheres well to painted surfaces
- A sanding block to level the filled areas smoothly
- A good quality wood glue for joints that have loosened
- Optional: a small electric drill or hand drill for screw holes, especially if the wood has swollen and needs to be redone

Regarding repair processes: scratches can often be treated with wax sticks or wood touch-up markers. These aren’t tools but can be very helpful. For swollen edges, I recommend gently smoothing them with fine sandpaper followed by refinishing with appropriate paint or furniture oil.

What kind of damage exactly do your furniture pieces have? Then I might be able to give more targeted advice on tools and repair techniques.

I would say:

- Phillips screwdriver
- Allen key
- Wood glue
- Fine sandpaper

With these, you can fix almost anything.

I believe that when giving such advice, the condition and use of the furniture should always be taken into account.

Simply listing tools without addressing the extent of the damage is not very helpful. For example: a small scratch can be repaired with a wood touch-up pen, whereas a swollen edge requires sanding and repainting to restore the surface, which is considerably more involved.

Are you sure all the joints are still secure, or are there any loose parts? If so, it might be necessary to replace the fittings entirely – and in that case, you may need additional tools like pliers or spare parts.

Regarding the question: Which tools are important for repairing Ikea HEMNES? – I would say that without suitable replacement fittings and some DIY skills, just having the tools is not enough.

Hey son59 and everyone else ;-)

I think the HEMNES series is fantastic, but yes, it definitely needs a bit of TLC. 🍀

Here’s what I always have on hand and would recommend:

- A good screwdriver with interchangeable bits, it really saves your nerves
- Some fine sandpaper, because every little scratch isn’t the end of the world
- Wood glue, since it quickly makes wobbly parts nice and stable again
- To touch up color or small cracks, I often use wax sticks or furniture markers – they come in many colors and do a great job

I totally agree with that – it really helps fix damage quickly.

And hey, if you do all this in a relaxed mood with a coffee, the project almost becomes fun! 😄

Hello son59,

I’ll simplify things a bit in case you want to approach this with less experience.

Important for HEMNES repairs are mainly:
- A suitable Phillips screwdriver, as many of the connections tend to loosen there.
- Wood glue to reinforce loosened joints.
- Sandpaper, preferably fine-grit, if you want to smooth out scratches or minor dents.
- If you want to fill cracks, you can use wood filler.

And: Be patient, better to do several final sanding rounds than too few!

Make sure not to sand too aggressively, otherwise you’ll damage the protective finish.

If you like, I can also give you tips on the proper procedure.
