Good morning everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about repairing my Ikea Hemnes dresser. Lately, I’ve noticed that some of the screw connections are loosening, and one corner of the wood has slight damage. Therefore, I’m considering which tools are best suited for the repair. I’m not only thinking about the usual screwdrivers but also about the types of wrenches, drills, possibly sealants, wood glue, and lubricants. Who has experience with this, especially with Hemnes furniture, and can offer advice on which equipment is really useful for securely tightening screws as well as gently repairing small wooden parts? I’m also interested to know if the same types of tools are used for assembly as for repairs. Thanks in advance for your tips!

A very good and detailed question – especially with Ikea Hemnes, material compatibility plays a significant role. I would first recommend using a good Phillips screwdriver or a suitable cordless drill with a built-in torque limiter for the screw connections to avoid over-tightening the wood. This is important because excessive force can damage the joints. For wrenches, typically Allen keys (hex keys) are relevant, which Ikea usually includes in the delivery, but for replacement work, a high-quality set in various sizes is advisable. For repairing wood surfaces, special wood filler is best suited for small cracks, combined with fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer). Wood glue with strong bonding power is ideal when parts need to be re-secured or filled. A tip: it is best to use water-based glue that dries transparent and does not yellow. Sealant is rarely needed for Hemnes, unless there are large gaps or leaks in the back panels. I would also like to turn the question back: What exactly needs to be repaired? Do parts have to be replaced or just tightened and small spots patched up? The more precise the issue, the more accurately suitable tools can be recommended.

For repairing the Ikea Hemnes dresser, you usually only need a good Phillips screwdriver, a suitable Allen key (often 4mm or 5mm), and wood glue. To tighten the screws, it’s best to use the screwdriver to avoid damaging any plastic parts. For minor wood damage, I would recommend fine sandpaper and wood filler. Power drills are generally not necessary unless you want to replace screws.

I find this follow-up question very important because not every repair requires the same tools – and often unnecessary additional equipment is purchased.

In general, I would even question whether special tools are needed for an everyday piece of furniture like the Hemnes chest of drawers. Ikea designs fairly simple, modular furniture that can usually be maintained with a few standardized tools. However, some repairs do require care, for example if the wood is damaged and simple replacement parts cannot be swapped out.

I’m also interested in whether this is a one-time repair or regular maintenance – depending on that, the tool inventory changes significantly. So anyone planning to frequently screw and repair furniture should perhaps invest in higher-quality tools that are durable and ergonomic.

By the way, who actually uses the Ikea protocols or assembly instructions as a reference? They often already provide valuable information on tool sizes and types of screws.

I would like to add that when repairing Ikea Hemnes furniture, patience is often essential. Especially when screws have become loose, a precise Phillips or flathead screwdriver is usually enough to tighten them without causing damage.

For repairing wood damage, I like to use a combination of: - wood glue (preferably one designed for particleboard or MDF, as Hemnes parts are mostly made from these materials) - wood filler for filling gaps - fine sandpaper for smoothing surfaces

If you plan to use a drill, be sure to pre-drill with a smaller drill bit and insert screws slowly to avoid splitting the material.

It is also helpful to have your tools well organized and to use a torque tool or at least a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque for tightening connections. This helps prevent over-tightening, which can easily cause damage with these low-cost furniture pieces.

Additionally, I recommend investing in high-quality tools; inexpensive screwdrivers can quickly round off screw heads. In the long run, this saves time and frustration during repairs.
