Hello everyone,

I am about to assemble a kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and want to prepare as best as possible beforehand, especially regarding the tools needed. My question is: Which tools are ideal for assembling an IKEA Metod kitchen efficiently, accurately, and safely? I am interested in both standard tools like a cordless drill or hammer, as well as more specialized equipment that can make assembly easier or help avoid common difficulties. If anyone has extensive experience with Metod, I would also be curious to know where it is really worth investing in tools and which ones are more optional. I already have some tools at home but am looking to purchase additional ones specifically. Thanks for your advice!

Hello peodominik,

I completely understand your preparations because I built my kitchen with Metod some time ago and know how frustrating it can be when you don’t have the right tools at hand.

I definitely recommend having a cordless drill with good torque and a set of different bits. It’s really important to tighten the screws firmly but not too aggressively, as the chipboard can get damaged otherwise.

As a supplement, I found a small hammer with a nail puller handy for inserting dowels without causing damage. A good spirit level is also essential for aligning the cabinets properly – trust me, it saves a lot of frustration later on!

One small thing that is often overlooked is a small rubber mallet. Especially with Metod fronts, it helps minimize damage and lets you gently tap the parts together.

If you’re not very experienced professionally or from previous projects, I also recommend a protractor and a waterproof felt-tip pen for making precise markings.

For me, it was important not just to have as many tools as possible, but to focus specifically on those I would actually use. Hope this helps you – good luck with the assembly!

Hello peodominik,

to answer your question in detail, I would like to share some information about the IKEA Metod assembly process and which tools have proven especially useful.

First, it’s important to say that assembling Metod cabinets requires a combination of modular installation and precise adjustment. Without the right tools, small alignment errors can quickly cause major issues with door closing or overall stability.

Recommended tools:

- Cordless drill driver with adjustable torque: It’s important that it’s not too heavy so you can work overhead. A model with at least 18V power is ideal.

- Various bits: Phillips PH2 is most commonly used, but sometimes a flathead or Torx set is needed for specific screws.

- Spirit level with vials: At least 60cm (24 inches) long for cabinets, combined with a small spirit level for the countertop.

- Angle finder (e.g., miter gauge): For precise mounting on walls or checking corners.

- Rubber mallet: To gently tap dowels or cabinet components together without damaging surfaces.

- Measuring tape: At least 5 meters (16 feet), for exact measurement of the installation space and insulation clearances.

- Screwdrivers in different sizes: For fine adjustments and hard-to-reach areas.

- Wood screws such as Spax or similar: Good to have on hand for custom modifications.

- Rasp or sandpaper: In case minor corrections are needed on side panels or frames.

A few additional tips:

- Take your time and sort the parts first by pack numbers.

- Check before unpacking that all screws are included.

- The countertop sometimes requires separate treatment, so have appropriate tools ready for sealing or finishing.

If you want more details about the assembly or tips for handling tricky spots, feel free to ask. Especially regarding the alignment of wall cabinets on different wall surfaces, I invite you to describe your situation.

Best regards

Hello peodominik,

I would like to add some comments about the basic tools that I always recommend to anyone assembling their IKEA Metod kitchen themselves.

- Cordless drill/driver: As mentioned before, it should have an adjustable torque setting. This helps prevent over-tightening the often soft particleboard or stripping the screws.

- Drill bit set: Not only for metal screws, but also for wall plugs and if you need to make adjustments to walls, e.g., for mounting.

- Spirit level: An essential tool. Nothing is worse than crooked cabinets that warp over time or don’t close properly.

- Folding ruler / tape measure: For accurate measurements and checking the fit.

- Rubber mallet: Ideal for gently fitting connecting parts.

- A sturdy screwdriver (Phillips PH2, possibly with a magnetic tip): For manual assembly when the cordless drill doesn’t fit.

I also recommend gloves to protect against sharp edges and safety goggles if you need to drill into walls.

If you are installing the kitchen in a rental apartment, it’s best to check in advance whether you are allowed to damage the walls by drilling or if alternative fastening methods are required.

Especially with the Metod system, patient work and the right tools really pay off so you don’t get frustrated. I wish you good luck, and if you have specific questions about any points, feel free to ask!

I completely agree. For IKEA Metod, a lightweight, handy cordless drill driver is very important.

A rubber mallet often makes assembly much easier.

I’d also add: a utility knife for opening the packages and aligning the parts is helpful.

Everything else is mostly optional.
