Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes furniture piece in the next few days and want to prepare as best as possible regarding the tools needed. Since I already know that the furniture is quite extensive and uses various types of screws, I am particularly interested in which tools are helpful when assembling Ikea HEMNES.

I would like to know if, besides the standard Allen key, other tools are often useful, such as different types of screwdrivers, possibly a cordless drill/driver, or special aids for stability or saving time.

Does anyone have experience with what is really necessary or helpful to assemble the furniture efficiently and safely? Thanks in advance!

Regarding the question "Which tools are helpful when assembling Ikea HEMNES?" I can provide the following structured overview:

- The main tool is usually the included Allen key (typically 4 mm), which is sufficient for most screws.
- A small Phillips screwdriver (PH2) is useful for smaller screws that cannot be operated with the Allen key.
- For added convenience and to save time, a cordless drill driver with adjustable torque is recommended to tighten screws in a controlled manner without over-tightening.
- A rubber mat or protective surface helps protect the floor and prevents parts from slipping.
- A hammer or rubber mallet may occasionally be needed to gently tap wooden dowels into place.

Additional specialized tools are generally not necessary unless you want to avoid extra effort. The supplied fittings are compatible with the tools mentioned.

I agree with this. For example, with IKEA furniture like HEMNES, the included hex key is generally sufficient, but from experience, a higher-quality hex key or a bit attachment for a cordless drill is recommended, as the supplied tools tend to wear out or slip quickly.

Additionally, a screwdriver with interchangeable bits (Torx, Phillips, flathead) can be helpful in case unexpected types of screws are used in some versions of the HEMNES. An external rubber mallet is useful to securely fix wooden dowels without damaging the wood.

So my recommendation: hex keys (preferably a set or bit attachment), a Phillips screwdriver (PH2), a rubber mallet, and if possible, a torque adapter for the cordless drill to avoid overtightening.

Allen key is included. Plus a Phillips screwdriver. A cordless drill is very useful, but be careful with the torque. A rubber mallet is helpful if dowels need to be inserted. This is usually sufficient.

At first, I was unsure if I could assemble my HEMNES without any special tools. In the end, a simple but sturdy Phillips screwdriver was very helpful because the included Allen key quickly became uncomfortable to hold.

That was really helpful for me, especially when the joints fit tightly.

If you feel uncertain, it’s better to take the time to use high-quality tools – even a cordless drill with adjustable torque can make assembly easier and prevent frustration.

Do you have any tips on how to choose tools that can make the work easier or help avoid common mistakes?

Classic tools: Allen key, Phillips screwdriver, possibly a cordless drill. Pay special attention to torque, otherwise you can easily damage the parts.

That’s all you need.
