NugarthHello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble an IKEA Metod kitchen system and want to prepare well before starting. Therefore, my question is: Which tools do you consider absolutely essential for a proper and smooth installation of this system? I mean tools that an average DIY enthusiast should definitely have to save time and avoid mistakes. It would be helpful if you could briefly explain why you recommend these tools. Thanks in advance!
For assembling the IKEA Metod system, I strongly recommend the following tools:
- Cordless drill with adjustable torque to drive screws precisely without over-tightening
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2), as many IKEA screws have this type of head
- Spirit level to align cabinets and fronts accurately
- Tape measure to check dimensions during assembly and avoid mistakes
- Rubber mallet for gently tapping wooden dowels into place
These tools are essential for a smooth assembly process without damage. For example, skipping the spirit level can compromise the fit accuracy, making the build take longer and become more difficult.

I would like to add a protractor to Samir’s list! It’s a great tool, especially for aligning cabinets and fronts. This way, everything stays perfectly level, and crooked installations become a thing of the past! 😊
Also, I think a small utility knife or carpet knife should be part of the toolkit. It allows you to open films or packaging cleanly and cut cables neatly.
If you want to keep your tools to a minimum, you should definitely have a good set of hex keys, as the Metod series uses a lot of screws with hex sockets.

I also think a small utility knife or carpet knife belongs in the tool kit. I completely agree. A high-quality utility knife is useful for any kitchen installation—whether for precisely cutting films, packaging, or replacement seals.
Additionally, I recommend having a good set of deburring tools or a file at hand in case there are sharp edges around drilled holes. Especially with the Metod series, which includes many metal parts, this improves safety and makes assembly easier.
I also advise sorting all components and fittings before starting assembly. This saves a lot of time and frustration during screwing.
