Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe myself soon and want to prepare as well as possible. My question is directed to those who already have experience with assembling it: which tools are essential for building the Ikea Hemnes? I am especially interested in which hand tools are useful beyond the supplied parts and whether any special aids make the assembly easier or even necessary. I want to have everything ready from the start without having to buy additional tools later. Thanks for your tips and recommendations!

Hi andresreo, your question is very well phrased, as the Hemnes wardrobe is indeed a bit more complex than some other Ikea furniture pieces. Basically, you will definitely need the following:

- A good Phillips screwdriver (PH2), as most screws are fixed with this.
- A hammer for the dowels and possibly the joining elements.
- A cordless drill can be useful, but it should be used carefully so you don’t drive the screws in too deeply or damage the wood.

Many also use an Allen wrench, but these are usually included by Ikea. However, if you spot screws with different heads, check this beforehand.

Additionally, a small utility knife can be helpful for opening packaging or removing glue residues. And a spirit level should not be missing to align the wardrobe precisely at the end.

If you have any more questions, just ask—I’m happy to help!

For assembling the Hemnes wardrobe, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, hammer, possibly a cordless drill, and an Allen key (usually included). Everything else is optional.

I completely understand because I felt overwhelmed during my first Hemnes build as well. What really helped me was going through all the parts carefully and checking which tools I already had and what I still needed. I found a sturdy screwdriver especially important – the cheap ones from sets are often too short or flimsy, which can be frustrating.

I would also recommend a small rubber mallet if you don’t have heavy-duty hammers, as it helps the metal connectors slide into the wood without damaging the surface.

And be honest with yourself: if you’re unsure, it’s absolutely fine to use a cordless drill, but please use a low speed setting and handle it gently. That will save you time and hassle. You’re not alone in this; everyone has their own experiences.

For an accurate answer to which tools are truly essential for assembling the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe, here is a factual overview:

- Allen key: Provided in the package and indispensable for connecting the wooden parts using the included screws.
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2): Required for some fasteners but is not always included.
- Hammer or preferably rubber mallet: Needed to insert wooden dowels and connectors without causing damage.
- Cordless drill/driver: Not strictly necessary but can be helpful during longer assembly times if it has an adjustable torque setting.
- Spirit level: Ensures the furniture stands straight, especially important for larger wardrobes like the Hemnes.

Additionally, a utility knife or carpet knife is recommended for opening packaging or trimming small protrusions.

Having these tools on hand ensures a smooth and precise assembly process.

That’s correct, Juansi50, your summary is accurate. However, I would like to add that the quality of the tools also matters, as bente has already suggested. Especially for larger furniture pieces like the Hemnes wardrobe, a sturdy, ergonomic screwdriver can make a significant difference.

Exactly, planning is essential here. And honestly: for anyone who assembles furniture frequently or generally enjoys DIY projects, a small investment in good tools pays off in the long run.
